"They were focused. They knew the game plan and they knew what they needed to do, they just needed to execute it," said head Coach Chantel Cappuccilli about the mindset of the Westmont Women's Soccer Team going into Wednesday's away game against Soka University.
This focused mindset would lead the warriors to a 4-0 victory over Soka University.
Senior, Carling Richardson, set the tone by scoring the first goal of the game with a driven shot taken outside of the 18 yard box that soared into the upper left corner of the goal.
Later in the half, Jackie Lopez improved upon this 1-0 lead with a header goal off of an Angela Brown corner kick.
Even with a 2-0 lead, the Warriors remained focused and determined to continue executing the game plan for a full 90 minutes.
Freshman, Haylee Lopes, kept the Warrior's scoring streak alive by scoring the first collegiate goal of her career. Off of a layoff from Kelsey Steck, Lopes took a one touch, left-footed shot towards the left side of the goal to score the third goal of the game.
The fourth and final goal of the game was a beautiful collaboration between Alanna Richards, Grayce DeGroot, and Kaitlin Swift. It began when Alanna Richards took a free kick from 40 yards out to find the head of Grace DeGroot. DeGroot headed the ball across the face of the goal, and Kaitlyn Swift volleyed the ball into the net.
Cappuccilli expressed that she was proud of both the offense and the defense: the offense, for scoring eight goals in two games, and the defense for getting a much needed shutout.
She said, "Overall I am proud of their execution. This win was a great team effort."
This coming Saturday, the Warriors will travel down south to tap into an old rivalry, as they take on the Cougars of Azusa Pacific University.
