Warriors Thwarted by Cougars

After a strong first half, and neck-and-neck second half, #1 Westmont Women's Basketball (15-2, 4-0 GSAC) was defeated by the NCAA Division II Cal-State San Marcos Cougars (5-7) by a close score of 55-53.

The Warriors started off strong as they outscored the Cougars 20-11 in the first quarter and 13-9 in the second quarter – ending the first half with a lead of 13 points (33-20).

Two minutes into the third quarter, the Warriors achieved their largest lead of the game (35-20). However, the Cougars chipped away at this gap in the remaining eight minutes of the quarter when they went on six-point run followed by a five-point run, a minute and one half apart. Ultimately, they outscored the Warriors 11-7 in the third quarter. The Warriors ended the third period leading 40-31.

In the final quarter, the Cougars seized momentum immediately with back-to-back three-pointers within the first two minutes of play, making it a four point game.

Throughout the quarter, the two teams scored back and forth as they battled for the lead. They were tied, five different times in the final six and one half minutes of the game. With two and one half minutes left in the game, the score was 52-52. Ultimately it was the Cougars' shooting success in the fourth quarter that secured their victory. The Cougars outscored the Warriors 24-13 in the fourth period.

The Cougars had an overall shooting percentage of 44.7, while the Warriors shot at 37.5 percent.

With this tough road loss behind them, the Warriors will resume conference play at home game against Menlo (9-10, 2-4) this coming Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
