#1 Warriors Beat Biola

With the the momentum from their number one ranking in this morning's NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Top-25 Coaches' Poll, the #1 Westmont Women's Basketball team (13-1, 3-0 GSAC) triumphed over Biola (9-8, 2-1 GSAC) by a score of 62-40 in their third Golden State Athletic Conference game of the season.

The Warriors took initiative and scored the first four points of the game when junior Aimee Brakken scored a jump shot in the first twenty seconds and later Karr converted a steal into a layup.

The first period consisted of back and forth scoring and ended with Westmont in the lead 15-9.

The Warriors pulled even further in to the lead when they began the second period with a ten point run. The run began with back-to-back layups by freshman Kayla Sato and sophomore Lauren McCoy. Junior Aysia Shellmire tacked on a jump shot and both junior Cora Chan and Karr added on three-pointers. In this period the Warriors outscored the Eagles 21 to seven, and the first half ended with the Warriors leading 36-16.

Determined to improve upon their lead, the Warriors began the third period with a seven point run. The run consisted of a layup by McCoy, assisted by Karr; a layup by Shellmire that came from her own offensive rebound; and a three-pointer by Karr, assisted by Chan. Westmont ended the third period with a 23 point lead (47-24).

The fourth period consisted of even scoring amongst both teams with Biola outscoring the Warriors 16-15.

A key aspect to the Warriors' victory was in their overall shooting success. The Warriors had an overall shooting percentage of 46.3 while Biola shot at 38.5 percent. More specifically, the Warriors three-point shooting percentage was 38.9, while Biola's was 20.0.

Shellmire was a major contributor in tonight's game as she led the team in points with 17 and in rebounds with nine.

On Thursday, the Warriors will head to Riverside to play La Sierra (4-9) at 4:00 p.m.
