The Winning Streak Continues

The Westmont Women's Basketball team won their ninth consecutive game when they defeated the Golden Eagles of La Sierra by a score of 73-34.

"I think it was a good game for everybody to get in and contribute," explained head coach Kirsten Moore. "We have been continuing to focus on our pressure defense and our rebounding and it showed in tonight's game – we forced 20 turnovers and out rebounded them 51-27."

Additionally, the Warriors held the Golden Eagles to under 20 points in each half – 16 in the first half and 18 in the second quarter.

"In the second period we outscored them 19-4," noted Moore. "That second period is when we established a really good lead that we were able to build off of for the rest of the game."

The Golden Eagles scored first in the second period, but after that the Warriors went on an impressive 19-point run to establish a solid lead going into halftime (41-16). Five Warriors contributed to this run – it began with a three-pointer by senior Krissy Karr; senior Lauren Sende added on a jump shot, assisted by junior Cora Chan; junior Aysia Shellmire tagged on two more jump shots; Karr affixed another three-pointer, assisted by Chan; and junior Aimee Brakken and sophomore Morgan Haskin finished the run with a jump shot each.

"In many games this year we have put together one half instead of two – so we have been working on focusing on our rebounding, our defense, and our offense throughout the entire game," said Moore. "We have also been focusing hard on being able to extend leads when we get them. Their focus tonight was really good."

The Warriors increased their lead by four in the third period, but significantly extended their lead from 29 to 37, when they went on an eight-point run in the beginning of the fourth period. This run consisted of a three-pointer and a jump shot by senior Karlie Storkson, one free-throw by Haskin, and two free-throws by sophomore Jae Ferrin.

"I thought Kayla Sato had a really great game for us," added Moore. "She came off the bench in this game and really made an impact. She was our leading rebounder with 10 rebounds and was also effective offensively with eight points."

Furthermore, the Warriors had three players score in double figures – Shellmire led with 13 points, Brakken had 11, and Haskin had 10.

"Next week, we play Arizona Christian at home at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday and then go on the road Saturday for a non-league game against Cal State San Marcos at 6:00 p.m.," explained Moore. "Arizona Christian is playing better than their record has indicated in past years and they are having a great preseason so far. It is an important game and it will also be great to play at home."
