A pair of penalty kicks, one by each team, accounted for all the scoring on Saturday afternoon at Russ Carr Field as Westmont (7-4-1, 4-2-1 GSAC) and #17 Hope International (10-0-4, 4-0-2) settled for a 1-1 double overtime tie in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.
As a result of the stalemate, Hope International dropped into second place in the GSAC standings, two points behind front runner Menlo (11-2-1, 5-0-1). The Warriors are in third place, one point behind the Royals.
Hope's PK came in the 28th minute after Juan Gutierrez was fouled at the top of the 18-yard box. Thales Serra took the penalty kick and buried the ball in the net.
In the 62nd minute, Mason Garell passed the ball from the left flank to Matt Lariviere who was positioned two yards inside the 18-yard box. Lariviere was immediately taken down and the Warriors were awarded a penalty kick. Augie Andrade stepped up for the shot and quickly scored the equalizer.
The majority of the game was played on the Warriors' offensive end with Westmont outshooting Hope International 21-8 and claiming a 10-3 advantage on corner kicks. Unfortunately, Westmont was unable to convert the offensive advantage into points on the board.
Royals goalkeeper Ryan Brown recorded five saves on the day while Westmont's Lalo Delgado produced two.
The Warriors have three games remaining in the regular season. Next week, Westmont will host Menlo on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. and William Jessup on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Westmont will conclude the regular season on Wednesday, October 26 on the road at The Master's.
