Warrior Defense Detains Mustangs

Box Score

By Kaci Mexico

With two double-doubles by sophomore Lauren McCoy (17 points and 17 rebounds) and junior Aysia Shellmire (15 points and 10 rebounds) and an outstanding 20 points by senior Krissy Karr, #2 Westmont Women's Basketball (19-3, 8-1) earned a 66-59 Golden State Athletic Conference victory over #10 The Master's College (19-3, 9-1). This was The Master's College first GSAC loss.

After a close first half, the Warriors found themselves down 26-28 going into the third quarter.

Two minutes and twenty seconds into the third quarter, the Warriors went on a vital eight-point run to take a seven point lead (39-32) – a lead that they would sustain for the remainder of the game. This run began with a jump shot by Shellmire, assisted by junior Aimee Brakken; junior Cora Chan added a layup; and McCoy followed with back-to-back layups. The Warrior's outscored the Master's 22-13 in the third quarter.

The Mustangs answered by scoring four points within the first minute of the fourth quarter to close the gap to only four points (44-48). The Warriors silenced this momentum when they followed with a six-point run to gain a 10-point lead. McCoy had a jump shot and the subsequent free-throw, and Karr notched a three-pointer.

"Tonight's game was a battle between two really good teams," explained head coach Kirsten Moore. "The Master's is an outstanding team and is absolutely one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the nation. I was so proud of our defensive effort tonight and how focused we were on every possession.

"We battled like crazy on the boards with McCoy and Aysia coming up huge in that area [the Warriors outrebounded the Mustangs 43-40]," continued Moore. Krissy really kept us composed against their pressure and knocked down some big shots. Cora Chan and Aimee Brakken don't stand out on the stat sheet, but their defense was absolutely integral to our win tonight."

After three games on the road, the Warriors will return to Murchison Gym this Saturday where they will face Hope International at 5:30 p.m.
