David Gaydos picked up his first win of the season (1-0) as #16 Westmont Baseball (4-1) defeated Saint Katherine by a score of 5-0 on Friday afternoon at Russ Carr Field. Gaydos, who started for the Warriors, pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. The sophomore right-hander struck out seven and walked one.
Three Warrior hurlers provided an inning of work each to complete the game. Junior right-hander Stephen Larson pitched the seventh allowing one hit and striking out three. Sophomore left-hander Bay Buckley made his Warrior debut in the eighth, surrendering one hit. Senior right-hander Zach DeMarcus closed out the ninth, retiring the side in order and striking out one. Collective, Westmont pitchers struck out 11 and walked just one.
As for the offense, the Warriors' scoring started in the second inning. Junior designated hitter Michael Pollex led off for the Warriors and took first when he was hit by a pitch. Senior catcher Jarrett Costa then singled through the right side, moving Pollex to second. Michael Frigon relieved Costa on the base pads as a courtesy runner before freshman third baseman Luke Coffee singled down the left field line to load the bases with Warriors.
A walk to senior first baseman Turner Conrad forced Pollex home in what turned out to be the game winning run. Freshman sophomore Bryce Morison then singled to left field to drive in Frigon.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth inning, junior right fielder Derek Rodigo put a towering fly ball over the left-field fence for a solo home run, making it a 3-0 game. Rodigo, who homered and doubled in last night's game against Providence Christian in Arcadia, went two for four today.
Morison returned to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and produced a one-out single through the left side of the infield. He then advance to second on a single to left by senior left fielder Michael Valentin, Jr. Both runners moved up a base on a double steal before senior center fielder Alika McGuire doubled down the right field line to bring them home and put the Warriors up 5-0.
Westmont will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Thousand Oaks to take on the Kingsmen of California Lutheran in a two o'clock game.
