By Ron Smith

Westmont Baseball, ranked at number 16 in the nation, had a banner day at #10 The Master's taking both ends of a doubleheader. The Warriors won the first game by as score of 4-2. Then Westmont put on a slugfest in the second seven inning game, winning by a score of 23-5.

In the opener, starter Daniel Butler pitched a complete game to earn his fifth win of the season against no loses. The right-hander from Lone Tree, Colorado allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out three. Butler issued just one walk.

All the Warriors' scoring came in the sixth inning after Michael Stefanic led off with a double to left. A ground out to second base by Alex Bush advanced Stefanic to third. Jarrett Costa then reached on a single through the left side that drove in Stefanic, tying the game at one run apiece.

A walk to Graylin Derke moved Costa to second base. A pop up to shortstop created the second out of the inning before Costa reached third on a wild pitch, giving the Warriors runners on the corners. Derek Rodigo then walked to load the bases.

That brought up Matt Matlock whose single to right drove in Costa and Derke and advanced Rodigo into scoring position at second. A single by Andrew Devian loaded the bases before an infield single by Michael Frigon allowed Rodigo to score.

David Gaydos took the mound for the Warriors in the second game and pitched five innings to claim his sixth game of the year against one loss. Gaydos gave up four runs on three hits. Lance Simpson pitched the sixth, striking out all three batters he faced.

Offensively, the Warriors were unstoppable, scoring three runs in the second, four in the third, another four in the fourth and 12 in the fifth. The Warriors tallied 20 hits and benefited from seven walks. Alex Bush delivered a solo home run in the fourth, Turner Conrad drove in three with a home run in the third and Derek Rodigo connected for a grand slam in the fifth. Rodigo went five for six at the plate in the second game with four runs scored and six RBIs.

The 23 runs scored marks the fourth highest in Westmont history. While scoring 23 runs, Westmont left only six men on base. All 23 runs were earned and the result of 23 RBIs.

The Warriors and Mustangs will conclude the three-game series on Monday at 3:00 p.m. The game is a rain make-up from Friday's postponement.
