Lions Get Past Warriors

Box Score

By Ron Smith

Westmont Baseball (23-5, 13-3 GSAC) dropped the first game of a three-game Golden State Athletic Conference series to #18 Vanguard (22-7-1, 12-4), falling to the Lions by a score of 3-1.

Daniel Butler (6-1) took the loss for the sixth-ranked Warriors. Butler pitched seven and one-third innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits. He struck out four and walked three. Christian Lumanlan (2-0) earned the win for Vanguard by pitching seven scoreless innings while allowing five hits. Michael Jordan pitched the ninth inning and was awarded the save. Jordan allowed one run and gave up two hits.

Both teams led off their respective halves of the fifth inning with a double – Alika McGuire for the Warriors and Matt Harris for the Lions. Westmont was unable to bring McGuire home but Harris was able to score from third on a ground out by Justin Vega.

Vanguard picked up two more runs in the eighth inning, the results of a bases-loaded infield single to second and a bases-loaded balk.

The Warriors threatened in the ninth, but fell short of the three runs needed to send the game into extra innings. Alex Bush led off with a double down the right field line and advanced to third when Jarrett Costa singled to left. One out later, Bush scored the Warriors' only run on a ground out by McGuire.

Westmont and Vanguard will conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader that begins at eleven o'clock.
