By taking both ends of a soggy Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader, #16 Westmont (17-3, 8-1 GSAC) completed a sweep of San Diego Christian (9-10, 5-7). Westmont won the first game 6-3, then prevailed 10-1 in the finale.

Starter David Gaydos (5-1) was awarded the win in the first game after allowed three runs on eight hits in seven innings of work. Gaydos struck out five and walked three. Sam Sheehan was awarded the save, his sixth of the season.

Westmont scored two runs in the bottom of the first without getting a hit. After Michael Frigon walked to lead off the inning, Michael Stefanic laid down a bunt. A fielding error on the bunt allowed Frigon to reach third and put Stefanic on second.

Alex Bush produced a ground ball to second which allowed Frigon to score and Stefanic to reach third. Jarrett Costa then delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Stefanic.

The Royals responded in the top of the third by scoring three runs to take the lead. Caeden Barnes produced a two-RBI double to center field and later scored from third on a RBI-single to by Brooks Fages.

Westmont tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Andrew Devain's double to left center drove in Alika McGuire. McGuire had previously reached on a single to right.

Westmont broke the tie in the bottom of the seventh when Alex Bush doubled down the right field line to drive in Frigon from third. Then Graylin Derke deposited a two-run home run over the right field fence to account for the final score.

Zach DeMarcus (2-0) picked up the win in the seven-inning second game, which was played in a constant drizzle. DeMarcus held the Hawks without a run, allowing just three hits in four innings of work. Stephen Larson, Bay Buckley and Lance Simpson each added a single inning of work.

Westmont scored a single run in the second inning to take an early lead. Derek Rodigo led off with a double and one out later advanced to third on a ground out to second by Andrew Devian. Rodigo scored on a single to left center by Frigon.

The Warriors added four runs in the fourth inning. Turner Conrad led off and reached on an error. A sacrifice bunt by Devian moved Conrad to second, and then Conrad stole third. A dribbler past the mound by Frigon might have gone for an infield single, but San Diego Christian shortstop Austin Yeoman charged the ball and fired to home to retire Conrad and keep him from scoring.

With Frigon at first, Luke Coffey pinch hit and was walked. Another walk to Bush loaded the bases before Costa picked up an RBI by being hit by a pitch. Derke then singled up the middle to score two. An infield single by McGuire scored the fourth run of the inning.

The Westmont fifth inning yielded five more runs. Conrad and Devian both reached on errors before Frigon was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Stefanic reached on a fielder's choice that saw Conrad retired at the plate.

Alex Bush was also hit by a pitch, but the home plate umpire ruled that Bush did not attempt to get out of the way. Westmont head coach Robert Ruiz argued that Bush was hit in the back and had nowhere to go, but to no avail.

Bush responded by driving the ball into center field for a single and driving in Frigon and Devian. Costa then singled to left to score Stefanic and move Bush to second base. Michael Valentin, Jr. replaced Costa at first as a courtesy runner before both Valentin and Bush advanced one base on a wild pitch. Derke then doubled to left field to drive in Bush and Valentin.

On the day, Derke was three for seven at the plate with a double and a home run and six RBIs.

Now 30 percent into the conference season, Westmont stands in first place in the GSAC standings, one half game ahead of #22 Vanguard (16-5-1, 9-3), which has played one more three-game series than Westmont. Menlo (19-7) and #10 The Master's (14-7) are tied for third place with identical conference records of 6-3.

Next week, Westmont will travel to Santa Clarita for a three-game series with The Master's. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. with Saturday's doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
