Fueled by 12 hits and solid pitching performances by
Daniel Butler and
Lance Simpson, #7 Westmont Baseball (26-6) opened a three-game series against the Flames of Bethesda (21-14) with a 6-1 win.
Butler, who improved to 7-1, was awarded the win after allowing just one run on five hits in seven innings of work. The junior right-hander struck out eight and did not issue a walk. Butler, who lowered his season ERA to 1.53, posted the 18th win of his Westmont career.
Simpson relieved Butler in the eighth and retired in order all six batters that he faced while striking out two. In 14 1/3 innings of work over nine games this season, Simpson has yet to allow a run – earned or otherwise – and has given up just seven hits.
Westmont scored its first run in the opening frame when Alika McGuire singled to right and drove in Alex Bush from second. In the bottom of the third, Westmont scored three additional runs and may have had a bit more were it not for an April Fool's joke that the game of baseball played on the Warriors.
With two outs, Alika McGuire singled on a ball that travelled all of 10 feet down the third base line. McGuire was able to advance to third on a hit and run when Derek Rodigo produced an infield single. Graylin Derke then doubled down the right field line to score McGuire and move Rodigo to third.
Andrew Devian stepped up to the plate and shot a 3-2 pitch through the right side of the infield to drive home both Rodigo and Derke. Michael Frigon batted next and sent a ball on the ground to second baseman Brady Hochhalter. The Flame's second baseman had difficulty fielding the ball and he ended up booting it for what looked like it might be a run-producing error. The joke was on the Warriors, however, when Hochhalter's kicked ball travelled directly to first base where Daniel Dominguez picked it up for the Flames and stepped on the bag for the final out.
Bethesda picked up its only run in the top of the fifth. With one away, Dominguez singled to left field and then scored on a triple down the right field line by Mario Gonzalez.
Westmont scored its final two runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one away, Frigon walked and then reached second when Stefanic singled to left. After Turner Conrad was retired on a fly ball to right, Bush was walked to load the bases. Jarrett Costa then drove the ball to left for a two-RBI single.
The Warriors and Flames will conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
