Eagles Upset Warriors in GSAC Tournament

| Box Score 3

Sixth-ranked and top-seeded Westmont Baseball (41-10) fell victim to the long ball on Monday – the opening day of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament. The Warriors fell to the fifth-seeded Eagles of Biola (30-25) by a score of 4-2.

The Warriors scored a run in the second and a run in the third to take an early 2-0 lead.

Graylin Derke received a walk to lead of the second inning before reaching second when Derek Rodigo was hit by a pitch. Alike McGuire stepped to the plate and hit a ground ball to third. The Eagles' attempt at a double play retired Rodigo at second. However, and error on the play allowed Derke to score.

Michael Stefanic led off the third inning with a bomb off the left field fence but was only able to reach first base due to an an injury he suffered on his way to the bag. Austin McGilvra was called upon to take Stefanic's place before Michael Frigon laid down a bunt single, giving the Warriors men on first and second with no outs. Alex Bush singled to right center to drive in McGilvra for the only run that would score in the inning.

Biola took away Westmont's advantage with back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the fourth. With two away, Alec de Watteville snuck a line drive over the left field fence for the first round-tripper. Jeremy Barth followed with a bomb to right.

In the top of the eighth, Jerron Largusa launched another solo home run, this one to right field. The Eagles scored again in the inning when de Watteville drove in Sam Thorne from second on a single to right.

Michael Rishwain (4-1) suffered the loss after taking over for starter Daniel Butler in the top of the eighth. Butler allowed two runs on four hits in seven innings of work. Biola's Jimmay Gallarda (7-6) was awarded the win after pitching seven innings. Daniel Jang pitched the ninth to gain his fourth save of the season.

Westmont will next play at three o'clock on Tuesday against the winner between Menlo and Vanguard on Tuesday morning. Menlo fell to Biola 4-2 in the first game of the day on Monday. Vanguard was shut out by The Master's 8-0 in the second game of the double-elimination Tournament.
