(ROCKLIN, Calif.) Aimee Brakken put up 16 points and Aysia Shellmire had 19 in the second half to lead third ranked Westmont Women's Basketball (15-1, 5-0 GSAC) to their fifth Golden State Athletic Victory- Westmont defeated the Warriors of William Jessup (7-5, 1-3 GSAC) by a score of 69-53. Kayla Sato also scored in the double-digits and had 12 points on the night.
William Jessup and Westmont battled throughout the first half – in the first quarter Jessup put up 13 points to Westmont's 16 and in the second quarter Jessup put up 15 to Westmont's 16. The first half ended in a score of 32 to 28, favoring Westmont.
Shellmire, the Warriors leading scorer, was held scoreless in the first half; however she entered into the second half with a jolt of energy and put up 13 of Westmont's 20 third quarter points- she then put up 6 of the Westmont's 17 fourth quarter points. William Jessup put up 15 and 10 points in the third and fourth quarters.
After back and forth scoring in the beginning of the third quarter, Westmont went on a 9-2 run to close out the quarter and go from a two point to a nine point lead (52-43). Shellmire had all the points in this run, with four layups and one free throw.
In the fourth quarter, Westmont pulled even further away when they went on a 7-0 run to take a 14 point lead (59-45). Shellmire had a layup, Sato had a layup and a free throw, and Brakken hit a jump shot.
With this win under their belt, Westmont will continue their road trip in Atherton with a GSAC game against Menlo this Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
