(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) The Master's University (14-11, 5-5 GSAC) defeated Westmont (11-6, 4-4 GSAC) by a score of 10 to 4 on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Mustangs' pitcher Jason Karkenny improved to 4-1 on the season. Karkenny held Westmont to nine hits and four runs in a shift that lasted eight innings. Though the Warriors scored single runs in three early innings, Westmont could not keep pace with a Mustangs team that kept adding to its early lead. The Warriors also struggled a bit on defense. Outs were left on the field and The Master's University capitalized.
Westmont did finally get to the workmanlike pitcher and mount a late rally. The Warriors forced Karkenny to make 122 pitches. After singles from Austin McGilvra and Connor McManigal, the rally flame was flickering in the bottom of the eighth. But erasing a six-run deficit proved too tall a task. Senior pitcher Danny Lutz entered the game in the bottom of the ninth and was perfect in relief of Karkenny.
High fives are in order for Austin McGilvra, who hit four singles for the Warriors, including one run batted in. Shane Soria, Michael Stefanic, and Luke Coffey also batted in runs. Westmont starter Daniel Butler dropped to 1-1 on the season, yet struck out six Mustangs. The Warriors will hope to rebound tomorrow in a double-header against The Master's University. Game one will be played on Russ Carr Field at 11:00 AM.
