Daniel Butler picked up his first win of the season and Warrior bats provided runs in each of the first five innings as #8 Westmont Baseball (11-2, 4-1 GSAC) earned an 11-3 Golden State Athletic Conference win over the Hawks of San Diego Christian (3-11, 2-8) on Friday. Westmont produced 10 hits and took advantage of two San Diego Christian errors.
Â
Butler pitched seven innings allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked two.
Bay Buckley pitched the eighth inning for the Warriors, walking the first batter he faced but retiring the next three.
Justin Sanders took the bump for the ninth in his collegiate debut, allowing one run on two hits while striking out one.
Â
Michael Trigon, batting second in the order, drove in the Warriors' first run with a double down the left field line that brought home
Connor McManigal.
Michael Stefanic was hit by a pitch and
Luke Coffey walked to load the bases with no outs. A walk to
Matt Matlock scored Frigon and kept the sacks full of Warriors.
Â
Two outs later,
Kyle Soria single down the left field line, driving in Stefanic and Coffey to make the score 4-0.
Â
McManigal led off the top of the second like he did the top of the first, reaching base on a single. After stealing second, McManigal advanced to third when Frigon ground out to second. A single to center by Stefanic allowed McManigal to cross home plate, making the score 5-1.
Â
The Warriors added another run in the top of the third after loading the bases via walks to Matlock and
Travis Vander Molen sandwiched around a single by
Derek Rodigo. Soria ground into a double play but Matlock scored to put the Warriors up 6-2.
Â
In the fourth inning, McManigal once again led off with a single, this one to right. One out later, Stefanic single to left, advancing McManigal to second. A walk to Coffey once again loaded the bases with no outs. Â Matlock walked for the third time, earning his second RBI.
Â
Rodigo then ground to short on what could have been an inning ending play. However, the second baseman's throw resulted in Rodigo advancing to second and Stefanic and Coffey both scoring.
Â
The fifth innings saw Soria receive a lead-off walk and
Austin McGilvra hit by a pitch. McManigal advanced both runners on a ground out brining up Frigon. The left fielder singled to center, driving in
Taylor Bush, Soria's courtesy runner, and advancing McGilvra to third. Â McGilvra scored on a sacrifice fly by Stefanic, making the score 11-2.
Â
The Warriors and Hawks will play two on Saturday to complete their three-game series.
