(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) The Warriors (26-19, 11-14 GSAC) defeated the Mariners of Marymount California University (20-20, 15-9 CAL PAC) by a score of 10-5 on Tuesday afternoon. Westmont returns to action on Friday for a crucial doubleheader against Menlo College. Marymount got out to a two-run lead in the first inning, thanks to a double off the bat of Andrew Banuelos that drove in two. Two innings later, the Mariners had the Warriors thrashing and bobbing in their wake after back-to-back home runs put the visitors up 5-0. Fortunately, as if given a new oxygen tank, the Warriors fought back into the game. Brody Weiss homered in the bottom of the third to put Westmont on the board. The momentum-changing homer was Brody's fourth home run of the season. Another life preserver was tossed into the water by pitcher Cory Dawson. Dawson entered in the top of the fourth inning and did not give up a run through three-and-a-third innings pitched.Â
Austin McGilvra doubled in the bottom of the fifth to cut Westmont's deficit to three runs. McGilvra would finish the game three for four. The Warriors would score twice more in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to 5-4. Later, in the bottom of the seventh, Taylor Bush singled to drive in the tying run. Then, with two outs in the seventh inning, Michael Stefanic stepped up to the plate and drove in two more runs. Stefanic's single put Westmont ahead 7-5. The Warriors added three additional runs to seal the victory. Â
The Warriors did not appear to suffer any major injuries today. But the injury bug swooped in for a couple of near misses. Head Coach Robert Ruiz absorbed a hard line drive off his foot in the bottom of the seventh. And Matt Matlock fouled a ball off his body in the eighth inning. Matt winced through and walked off this painful ricochet before returning to the plate. The Warriors have two days to ice sore muscles and prepare for what is sure to be an exciting weekend series. Westmont needs a strong showing to secure the fifth and final GSAC playoff spot.
