Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Warriors Shoot Down Hawks

(EL CAJON, Calif.) Jeremiah Anderson scored a pair of goals and Gabriel McEwen and Tyler Young added one each as Westmont Men's Soccer (4-2-3, 3-1 GSAC) cruised to a 4-0 Golden State Athletic Conference victory at San Diego Christian (3-8, 0-4 GSAC) on Saturday afternoon.

"The obvious piece is that we were able to score some goals," said Wolf reflecting on the game. "It was doubly nice that a couple of those went to Jeremiah. He is a player that we have been waiting for. He has gone through a different process than everyone else. We put him in the first 11 for the first time today. Getting a couple of goals was a real positive for him personally and a confidence builder for the team as well."

Anderson struck first in the 19th minute, then again in the 31st.

"The first goal was a nice ball that got played over the top by Sean Nakamota," said Wolf. "Sean picked up the ball just inside the midfield line and hit it diagonally over the top to Jerry. Jerry won a foot race and poked it past the goalkeeper.

"The second goal Jerry scored was an amazing finish. He was on the right-hand side of the box and just smashed a ball to the far post."

McEwen scored in the 52nd minute, putting the Warrior up 3-0.

"Collin Scott got a ball played wide on the left and hit a low, hard shot on goal and the keeper made the save," described Wolf. "The rebound went right to Gabe and he tucked it in an open goal."

The final goal came from Tyler Young who was assisted by Francisco Castro.

"The last goal that Tyler scored was a terrific counter attack that involved Gabe Thurner and Francisco Castro," reported Wolf. "Gabe drove with the ball down the middle of the field and slid it out wide to Panchito. Panchito served it across the month of the goal and Tyler first-timed it into the goal. It was a really nicely crafted and a very quick counter."

Freshman goalkeeper Andres Quiros made the first start of his collegiate career and earned a shutout.

"We've been wanting to get Andres onto the field," noted Wolf. "He was slated to play in our scrimmage against Point Loma, but he was ill that day. Lalo came out of the game on Thursday night a little bit banged up. The combination of Lalo having played so many minutes and our wanting to take a look at Andres on the field led us to make the move.

"He did a really good job. There wasn't a ton for him to do, but I thought from a communication standpoint Andres was really sharp. He kicked pretty well and was calm when balls were played back to him. He did a good job of organizing his box. He handled one cross late that was pretty tricky and I thought he did a good job of applying good foot work and coming out and getting the ball."

In other GSAC action, #16 Vanguard (9-2, 4-0) defeated the visiting Oaks of Menlo (5-5-1, 1-3) by a score of 4-0 and Hope International (8-1-2, 4-0) snuck past William Jessup (3-8-1, 0-4) by a 4-3 margin. Arizona Christian (6-5, 1-3) sent the visiting Mustangs of #25 The Master's (8-2-2, 3-1) home with a 3-2 loss.

Westmont is now tied with The Master's for third place in the GSAC, having accumulated nine points in the conference standings (three for each win). Three-points ahead are both opponents for next week – Hope International and Vanguard.

"We've made some progress on this trip," reflected Wolf. "I thought it was a good response to the Menlo game. Now the question is, can we take that progress and take it one more level up as we face the top two teams in the conference.

Westmont will host Hope International on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. and Vanguard on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
