(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) #15 Westmont Women's Tennis (8-10, 4-2 GSAC) fell to #11 San Diego Christian (9-6, 6-0 GSAC) Saturday afternoon in a Golden State Athletic Conference matchup by a score of 4-5. The victory seals the GSAC championship for the Hawks and leaves the Warriors with a second place finish.
A Westmont win would have left both teams in a tie for the coveted GSAC crown. In singles play, Nadine Geschke defeated Westmont's
Tatum Phillips 6-3, 6-3 at fours. In the six position,
Taylor Cheung-Damonte knotted the score at one with a win over Paula Vazquez 6-1, 6-1.
Delaney Roche snagged the lead for the Warriors with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Miriam Boeta.
Peyton Trebisky added to the Warrior lead with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) win over San Diego's Aleksandra Emelianova – brining the score to 3-1 in favor of Westmont. San Diego responded with two victories in the one and two position. At twos, Sarah Urbanek defeated
Cade Pierson 6-4, 6-2. At ones, Sarah Schaerer took down
Isabel Lee 5-7, 6-0, 6-1 to tie the game at three.
The match came down to who would win in doubles play. San Diego won at twos as Shaerer and Emelianova made quick work of Pierson and Cheung-Damonte 8-2. The Hawks sealed their victory at ones as Urbanke and Geschke won 8-5 over Westmont's Lee and Trebisky. At threes, Phillips and Roche triumphed over Vazquez and Boeta 8-3. San Diego came away with the 5-4 victory and the GSAC regular season championship.
Both teams will now look forward to the GSAC Tournament in Indian Wells this coming Thursday and Friday. Westmont will head into the tournament as the number two seed and will play the third-seeded Arizona Christian (10-9, 2-4 GSAC) at 9:00 a.m. The winner will play the victor of top-seeded San Diego Christian and fourth-seeded Hope International (0-16, 0-6 GSAC) on Friday at 9:00 a.m.
