Â
(CLAREMONT, Calif.) It was an inauspicious start for Westmont Women's Basketball (0-1) as the Warriors fell 58-39 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the season opener. The game started off well enough for the Warriors who jumped out to a 16-10 lead in the first quarter.
Â
The second quarter, however, saw the Warriors outscored 20-3.
Â
"We really struggled tonight in pretty much every aspect of the game," said Westmont head coach
Kirsten Moore. "Things that this group has consistently done, and was able to do last year, we struggled with tonight. We couldn't get stops when we needed to.
Â
"The rebounding really hurt us. Every time we did play good defense, we couldn't get a stop on the board. It gave them all the momentum in the world."
Â
The Warriors were outrebounded 51 to 27.
Â
"We were struggling, fighting their momentum, trying to get going offensively," said Moore. "For us to go one for 15 from the field two straight quarters is crazy when you thing about how many phenomenal shooters we have on this team."
Â
The Warriors were led in scoring by
Krissy Miyahara who went three for seven from the field.
Â
"I thought Krissy, of the bench, gave us a great spark," said Moore. "She is such a phenomenal shooter. She hits those threes off the bench and that gave us a little spark for a while, but it didn't last long enough."
Â
The Warriors shot just 24.1% from beyond the arc (seven of 29) and just 23.1% (six of 26) from inside the 3-point line.
Â
"There is a lot we can learn," said Moore. "I know that we have a lot of fighters on our team and we are going to need to regroup and control what we can control and come back fighting to get better."
Â
The Warriors next opportunity to take the floor will be on Saturday morning. At the unusual time of 10:30, Westmont will welcome the Eagles of Northern New Mexico to Murchison Gymnasium.
