Davidson Scores Twice in Warrior Win

(LANCASTER, Calif.) Freshman forward Reese Davidson tallied two goals and an assist as #25 Westmont Women's Soccer (5-1) posted a 5-0 shutout over Antelope Valley (2-2) to post its fifth victory in a row.

"The field was really slow and the grass was really long, so it was a challenge to us because it didn't cater to our ability to play the ball along the ground," explained head coach Jenny Jaggard. "The ball was really slow and it took us a while to adjust to the pace that we had to play at."

Eight minutes in, however, Maddi Berthoud recorded her fifth goal of the season off an assist by Teagan Matye.

"Teagan took a nice half-turn and played the ball across to Maddi who flipped it in," reported Jaggard. "Teagan was at the 12 and she slotted it to Maddi on the six."

It would be another 30 minutes before the Warriors would take a 2-0 lead.

"The second goal was a great little bit of teamwork," said the coach. "Reese got the ball in the middle third of the field and swung a great ball for Kira Nemetz, who went one-on-one with the keeper. Kira was at the edge of the final third, about 25 yards out from the goal when she first touched the ball. She recognized that she had a couple of touches so she dribbled and committed the keeper before she slid the ball in behind her."

After making adjustments throughout the first half, Westmont was ready to roll in the second frame.

"We moved the ball and looked more like ourselves in the second half," assessed Jaggard.

In the 65th minute, Davidson notched her first goal as a Warrior.

"Grace Hotaling sent a great ball through to Reese," said Jaggard. "Reese was sitting high on the back line and it was just her and the keeper. She was patient and on the second touch lift it up and placed it from inside the 18.

"Grace had a great game today," offered Jaggard. "I loved the way she played in the middle. She was winning everything in the air for us."

It took Davidson just two more minutes to record her second collegiate goal.

"Reese was a little off-center, to the right of the goal, when she got the ball," noted Davidson. "The keeper came out and Reese chipped her and got the ball in behind her.

"Reese has a ton of potential and works super hard," said Jaggard. "It's nice that all the hard work pay off today."

Isabelle Berthoud recorded the final game came in the 76th minute on her third goal of the season.

"We tried to play a through ball, but it pinged off of one or two defenders," explained Jaggard. "Izzy was running through when she reached the ball. She did a great job of placing it. It went back post, on the ground, tight into the corner."

Through six games, 10 different Warriors have scored goals and 10 different Warriors have recorded at least one assist.

The Warriors will be off until September 19 when they travel to Georgia for a pair of games. The first will be against top-ranked and defending national champion William Carey of Mississippi (4-0). The second game will by two days later against #23 Mobile of Alabama (4-0)."

"It is a good feeling to be 5-1," acknowledged Jaggard. "It is sobering, however, to realize that in a week's time we are heading off to play some of the top-ranked schools in the NAIA. I am excited that we are winning, but I also know that we have a lot to do defensively to be prepared for what is up next.

"I think we have to take the positive moments and keep moving forward. We are fairly organized considering how early it is in the season, but we also have to keep reminding ourselves that there is more to be done and we have to keep getting better."
