(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) As Westmont head coach
Dave Wolf pointed out, for the first time in 466 days, Thorrington Field hosted a regular season men's soccer game on Wednesday. Point Loma Nazarene made the trip from San Diego up the coast and headed home with a 2-1 win.
Â
The two teams were scoreless until the 45th minute when Hunter Loomis was fouled just inside the 18-yard box by Westmont's Josh Phillips. A yellow card was issued and a penalty kick awarded to the Sea Lions. With less than a minute to go before intermission, Tim Siegfried landed the penalty kick in the back of the net to give Point Loma a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Sea Lion's second goal came in the 50th minute of play. Siegfried took a corner kick and passed the ball along the ground to Corey Lundeen, then dashed back along the touchline. Lundeen passed it back to Siegfried who booted it toward the front of the goal. There, it found the head of Loomis, whose nod sent the ball careening against the cross bar and down into the goal.
Â
Westmont scored its lone goal seven minutes later. Tuscano, working against a Sea Lion defender, stole the ball with his left foot just inside the top of the 18-yard box. The junior dribbled two or three steps, then blasted the ball past the keeper for Westmont's first goal of the season.
Â
Now that they have an official game under their belts, the Warriors are eager for the rest of their season. However, COVID-19 protocols have brought into question when they will next don their kits and take the pitch. Please refer to the Official Westmont Athletics Website for information as it becomes available.
