Â
(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Men's Tennis (3-4, 1-3 GSAC) picked up their second victory of the season at the hands of the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen on Wednesday, this time by a score of 5-2.
Â
Westmont had an early clinch in doubles play, winning on court number two and one within a matter of minutes. On court two,
Logan Thompson and Matthew Alleman gave Westmont the first advantage of the day defeating Charlie Spina and Ryan Murphy 6-3. Moments later,
Ethan Ha and
Callen Hein clinched the doubles point against Cal Lu for the second time this time this season, this time by a score of 6-4.
Â
In singles play, Alleman could do no wrong on court four as he won 12 straight games to tally the second point of the match for Westmont. Over on court one, Cal Lu's Charlie Spina got the Kingsmen on the board when he defeated
Logan Thompson 6-2, 6-2. The Kingsmen tied things up briefly when Jacob Bear overpowered
Sebastian Vethan, winning 6-1, 6-2.
Â
Following consecutive match losses for the Warriors,
Callen Hein pulled Westmont within one point of victory on court three, when he was able to finish off Darvel Lossongoye in the second set, winning the match 6-1, 7-5.
Â
With victory looming on the horizon for Westmont, all eyes moved to court two where
Ethan Ha was attempting to outlast Cal Lu's Corey Karen. Karen fought off match-point on three different occasions to force a tie-breaker. In the middle of the tie-breaker however, Westmont was able to exhale earlier than expected when
Michael Hopkins hollered from court six, announcing his surprise victory.
Â
After Hopkins defeated Ryan Murphy 6-3, in set one, he dropped the second set by a score of 3-6 and fell behind 2-4 in the third. With it appearing as though Hopkins would drop the match to even things 3-3, attention fell solely to court two. But Hopkins roared back and won four straight games, claiming the final set 6-4, and clinching victory for Westmont.
Â
Ha ultimately outlasted Karen in the tie-breaker, winning the match 7-5, 7-6 (5) to end the day with Westmont on top 5-2. Â
Â
Westmont returns to GSAC play on Saturday, when they host San Diego Christian at 12:00 PM. Westmont will be looking to improve upon their last outing versus the Hawks, in which they lost 0-4 back on February 20.
