(IRVINE, Calif.) Westmont Women's Soccer has captured at least a share of the Golden State Athletic Conference West Regular Season Championship by posting a 1-0 win over Hope International. The Warriors also earned the right to host the GSAC Championship game on April 10.
Â
The game remained scoreless until the 85th minute when
Reese Davidson provided the lone goal, assisted by
Grace Hotaling.
Â
"Reese scored the winning goal with a well-placed shot," said Westmont head coach
Jenny Jaggard. "The whole team did a good job of managing the clock for the remainder of the game to claim the win. Overall, we moved the ball pretty well today and generated some good opportunities."
Â
The Warriors outshot the Royals 18-6 and held a 9-2 advantage of shots on goal.
Â
Jaggard touted the play of two of her freshman in the game. "
Brynn Howard did an outstanding job in the midfield and at the outside back position on two occasions during the game when
Taylie Scott had to step off (the pitch) and we had to rotate players around. Brynn was very solid defensively and created a couple of our best chances in the attack.
Â
"
Kendall Ollenburger played her first start and full 90 minutes as the right back. She did a really good job staying composed and made some good decisions under pressure. Her speed helped us a couple times on defensive transitions."
Â
The Warriors have two games to go in the conference play and hold the tiebreaker over Hope International, which is the only team that can catch them in the conference standings point totals. Westmont needs just one win or one tie in its final two games, both of which are with San Diego Christian, to claim the title outright.
Â
Westmont is next in action on Monday, March 29 when they host Azusa Pacific at Thorrington Field in a non-conference contest.
Â
Due to COVID-19 mandates by the State of California and County of Santa Barbara, no spectators will be admitted to the games. Fans can follow the action on the Westmont Sports Network broadcast at https://athletics.westmont.edu/video or by tuning in on Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV or Roku.
