(LA MIRADA, Calif.) Following the conclusion of the Golden State Athletic Conference Regular season the Warriors (28-18, 20-12 GSAC) looked to stay fresh ahead of a possible bid into the NAIA Opening Round beginning on May 17. With that in mind, Westmont traveled down to La Mirada on Friday afternoon and spoiled the Eagles' (10-16, 10-13 Pacwest) senior day by collecting a 6-4 victory.
The Warriors were led by the right arm of
Cameron Phelps, as the junior transfer delivered his best outing in a Westmont uniform. Coming into Wednesday Phelps carried a season ERA of 6.23 with a single-game innings high of 2.2. But on Friday Phelps answered the call, hurling five shutout innings to earn the victory.
Phelps surrendered only one hit, struck out three over the five innings, and remained out of trouble for the most part with the most dangerous moment of the start coming in his fifth and final inning.
The Eagles trailed 4-0 and mounted a rally, putting runners at first and second with just one out for Tyler White. But Phelps induced an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play to preserve the shutout and put himself in position for the win.
Offensively, the Warriors struck first in the second when
Josh Rego continued to swing a hot bat and singled to right field to bring home
Thomas Rudinsky.
Simon Reid doubled the lead two innings later, when he clobbered his seventh home run of the season. In the fifth inning the Warriors scored twice on a pair of passed balls, with
Daniel Netz and
Brady Renck carrying the runs home.
In the seventh inning,
Alex Stufft collected his team-leading 43rd RBI of the season when he singled home
John Jensen. And an inning later Reid brought home the club's sixth run when he doubled home Stufft.
Six runs was all the staff would need as after Phelps's departure the bullpen scattered four runs across the final four innings.
Aidan Holly followed Phelps with 2.2 innings of work, allowing three runs to come across with only one having been earned. After Holly,
Bradley Heacock got the final out of the eighth to pass the baton to Westmont's closer,
Robbie Haw.
And with two on and two out with the potential winning-run at the plate, Haw got Jake Montero looking with a fastball at the knees to earn his sixth save of his freshman year, and ensure a happy ride back to Santa Barbara.
The two teams change scenery tomorrow with the Warriors welcoming the Eagles at Russ Carr Field with a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 AM. Westmont will be celebrating senior day, and live coverage will begin on the Westmont athletics website minutes before first pitch to cover the pregame ceremonies.
