(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Women's Tennis (6-6, 4-0 GSAC) continued to run through their GSAC opponents on Saturday in Santa Barbara. The latest victim of Westmont's winning streak was Arizona Christian (3-8, 2-2 GSAC), who fell to Westmont by a score of 6-1 earlier today.
"As planned, it seems like we're catching momentum as we go through the season," said Westmont associate head coach
Cade Pierson. "Our difficult schedule early has set the standard for the caliber of tennis we want to play, and with each game we play, we are gaining confidence and raising the level of our tennis."
In doubles play, Westmont swept ACU with dominant play all around. Starting things on court three,
Sophia Ostovany and
Logan Jackson defeated Emma Troyer and Slvie Schoenen in six consecutive games. Then, on court one,
Rachal Jackson and
Christine Hemry defeated Deondra Bacchus and Vittoria Qadri 6-2.
On court two, to finish things off,
Emily Peterson and
Francesca Aguirre finished off Johanna Lutz and Karla Grobbelaar 6-3.
"All of our doubles teams played very well," noted Pierson. "On one and two, we had to play very well to win those matches. Their opponents were teams they could lose to if they didn't play well. If we hadn't started out strong, those could have been tough matches for us.
"Like yesterday, we were very intentional from the beginning, and played our game from the start."
In singles, the only Warrior to drop a match was Peterson, who fell to Qadri on court two. Away from that, the Warriors rolled through the Firestorm for the rest of the day.
Aguirre's match was over quickly, as the freshman defeated Lutz 6-0, 6-0. Much like Aguirre,
Kaley Houshmand made quick work of Samantha Salim on six, defeating the ACU player 6-1, 6-2.
Ostovany found similar success on five, defeating Troyer 6-0, 6-1, and Hemry followed suit on four, where she defeated Grobbelaar 6-1, 6-4.
Jackson capped things off with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Bacchus on court one.
"I'm really satisfied with how we played in singles," said Pierson. "Francesca really took care of business, not losing a single game. Rachal had a really good match as well. Honestly, Rachal's opponent was someone who could have even beaten her, but she did a great job of maintaining composure.
"Overall, we had to be mentally tough. ACU's men's team was there and they were being loud, and to be honest, pretty annoying. Our women did a great job of focusing on their match and focusing on themselves. It was strictly business and we took care of it."
Westmont returns to action this coming Monday, when they travel south to take on Middlebury at Claremont McKenna. First serve is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
