(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) On Saturday afternoon in Santa Barbara, Westmont Men's and Women's Tennis both came away with victories against the visiting Hope International Royals.
On the men's side, the Warriors (3-4, 3-0 GSAC) moved into first place by themselves after defeating the Royals (1-8, 0-2 GSAC) 4-3. For the women, Westmont (4-5, 2-0 GSAC) also took early possession of first place in the conference after sweeping the Royals (1-5, 0-2 GSAC) 7-0.
"I'm really happy with the tennis we played today," said Westmont Women's Tennis associate head coach
Cade Pierson. "This match is a great reminder that the level of tennis in our conference is continually rising and we have to show up to every match ready to play."
In doubles play, for the women, Westmont dropped the first match on court one, but rallied to take the two remaining matches and claim the doubles point. On court two,
Emily Peterson and
Francesca Aguirre defeated Lisanne Siebrecht and Isabel Coscolluela 6-4.
On court three,
Sophia Ostovany defeated Catrina Hibbard and Maxime Mendes 6-3.
"In doubles, what was great was we managed the balance between setting up points patiently, and aggressively taking our opportunities," offered Pierson. "Our wins on two and two were great matches that could have gotten away from us, but we stuck with our game plan."
In singles play, Westmont rolled all the way across the board. On court one,
Rachal Jackson defeated Julia Ramos 6-2, 6-1, and on court two, Peterson defeated Carolina Guerrero Barrios 7-5. 6-2.
Over on three, Aguirre came out victorious over Siebrecht by a score of 6-2, 6-1, and on four, Hemry defeated Maxime Mendez 6-1, 6-2.
Closing out the day, Ostovany defeated Coscolluela 6-4, and
Kaley Houshmand defeated Hibbard 6-3, 6-0.
"We had a long rain delay after doubles," shared Pierson. "Our team had to sit and wait for over an hour, and I am really proud of how we performed after the long break. Everyone played smart and efficient tennis.
"Today, we showcased our discipline in our mindset and how we took care of business. A theme on our team this year has been 'start strong, finish stronger', and we did just that today."
In doubles on the men's side, Westmont took matches on court one and court three to claim the first point of the match. On court one,
Logan Thompson and
Ethan Ha defeated Adam Fzello and Flo Sirven 6-1. Then, on court three,
Benny Saito and
Santiago Tintore Ramon clinched the point with a 6-2 victory over Yazid Benchegra and Ricky Lizardo.
In singles play, Thompson took the first set from Szello, 6-2. Then, due to injury, Szello retired, giving Thompson and the Warriors the first singles point.
Westmont's final two wins came on courts three and four. On court three,
Owen Vander Ark defeated Yahia El Sheikh 6-3, 6-3. Then, on court four,
Tristan Wright came away with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Lizardo.
