Â
(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Women's Soccer finished up the 2023 season on Saturday at Thorrington Field. Unfortunately for Westmont, the Warriors ended the season on a 2-1 loss to the Golden Eagles of Concordia.
Â
"The game today is summarized by failing to execute our game plan," said Westmont's head coach
Jenny Jaggard. "Concordia was not sharp in the first half, but we didn't make the diagonal switches we intended and missed out on opportunities to take advantage of their vulnerability"
Â
A goal by
Amelia Villa in the 30th minute put the Warriors on the board first.
Daisy Alvarez took a free kick from near the right touchline and sent it to the far side of the six-yard box where Villa headed the ball back into the goal. It was the sophomore's team-leading, seventh goal of the season.
Â
"I was excited that we scored the header goal off the set piece," expressed Jaggard. "That has been something I've challenged them to be better at in the last few weeks, so it was nice to see us capitalize."
Â
Unfortunately for the Warriors, the lead did not last long. Just five minutes later, Nikki Marino put her own header into the net, tying the score at one. Then, with a minute left before halftime, Madison Hall scored on a breakaway.
Â
"The two goals we gave them were very disappointing from an organizational standpoint in defending out of the box," admitted Jaggard. "We need to improve this for next season."
Â
Concordia had the run of play much of the game and took 20 shots to Westmont's three. Half of the Golden Eagle's shots were on goal.
Â
"I thought
Maya Pablos had some great saves today," said Jaggard. "She is getting more and more confident at owning her goal area."
Â
Pablos recorded eight saves, bringing her season total to 60. She posted a season goals-against average of 1.12.
Â
"A shout out to my seniors
Taylie Scott,
Monica Pizano and
Daisy Alvarez," said Jaggard. "They played their hearts out today.
Grace Duckens and
Macey Preciado were unable to play due to injuries, but they were great teammates supporting from the sideline. These seniors have made huge contributions to our program on and off the field. We love them and will miss them as they move forward with their lives."
