Â
(SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.) In a back-and-forth affair in the Bay Area, Westmont Men's Basketball (2-2) could not keep up with San Francisco State (3-1) in the end. After 39 minutes of play the two sides entered the final minute knotted at 69, but during minute 40 the Gators outscored the Warriors 7-0 to take the game 76-69.
Â
The game saw the lead change 13 times, with SFSU leading 44.9% of the contest, while Westmont led a fair share as well at 43.2%. For Westmont, their largest lead of the night came just past the 12:00 minute mark in the first half, when a pair of free throws by
Jarrett Bryant put the team up 18-12.
Â
The two-possession lead would never grow and instead continue to trend in the opposite direction as the half wore on.
Â
By the end of the first half Westmont trailed by four (33-29), and less than four minutes into the second half, the Gators led by double-digits. Westmont trailed by as many as 11 (44-33), but the Warriors kept themselves within striking distance and took their first lead back with seven minutes remaining following a 3-pointer from
Jalen Townsell (58-56).
Â
Over the final seven minutes of action the two sides continued to go back and forth, with Westmont's last lead being taken with just over two minutes to play. At that point, a dunk by Townsell in transition gave Westmont a 68-67 lead, but from that point on the Warriors' only remaining score for the game would be a single converted free throw.
Â
With the game tied at 69 with 50 seconds to go Westmont fouled SFSU's Jailen Daniel-Dalton as he drove to the basket for a layup. Daniel-Dalton's shot fell, as did the additional free throw that followed, and after an empty possession the other way, Westmont was left with an uphill battle they were unable to overcome.
Â
Individually, Townsell, Bryant, and
Drew Ramirez all scored 11 points, while
Anthony McIntyre dropped in 10 of his own.
Dayshone Henry, who had eight points, led Westmont with nine rebounds, while
Amir Davis, who scored nine points, led Westmont with six assists.
Â
Westmont will next take the court on Wednesday night in The Thunderdome, when the Warriors play a cross-town exhibition against the Gauchos. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and links to tickets and live coverage will be available on the Westmont Athletics website.
