Â
(SAN RAFAEL, Calif.) Westmont Men's Basketball (8-14, 4-10 PacWest) came up just short on Saturday afternoon in Northern California, when the Penguins of Dominican (9-14, 6-9) out-lasted Westmont 94-92. It was a high scoring affair from the start, but in the end, Dominican outscored Westmont 53-42 in the second half to win it.
Â
The Warriors enjoyed similar success in the first half, when they entered the locker room leading the Penguins 50-41. Two minutes into the second half
Anthony McIntyre buried a 3-pointer that stretched Westmont's lead to 11 (55-44), but from there, Dominican began to chip away.
Â
Westmont still led by eight as the game entered its final 13 minutes, and by three as it entered its final 10. At the 7:05 mark, however, a layup from the Penguins brought Dominican all the way back, putting the home team up 77-76.
Â
From there the clubs continued to trade the lead, with Westmont leading by three as late as the 5:30 mark (82-79). Dominican drew even again just as the game entered its final three minutes, and began to sense the finish was close when they buried a three to go up 92-89.
Â
Jarrett Bryant played hero temporarily a possession later, however, when he drilled a triple with 1:45 remaining to tie things up. Unfortunately for Westmont, it would be their final basket of the night. Neither side scored again until the final ten seconds of the contest, when a layup by Dominican's Dale Currie gave them a two-point advantage.
Â
Westmont got one last heave at the buzzer when McIntyre threw up a three-pointer, but it would not fall, leaving the Warriors with a bittersweet split on their Bay Area road trip.
Â
McIntyre did lead Westmont with 22 points on nine of 11 shooting, while Bryant led the club with nine rebounds, and
Amir Davis collected four assists.
Â
The Warriors will return to action on Valentine's Day, this Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m., when the club hosts Azusa Pacific. Links to tickets and live coverage will be available on the Westmont Athletics website.
