New Home Run King

By Ron Smith
April 26, 2024

(IRVINE, Calif.) Westmont's Daniel Patterson rewrote the baseball record book on Friday afternoon in Irvine, but the Warriors (32-14-3, 22-7-1 PacWest) dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Concordia (22-19, 16-14). The Warriors lost the first game 14-10 on a walk-off grand slam by Luke Glascoe, then fell in the second game 4-3.

Patterson belted two solo home runs in the first game – one in the fifth inning and another in the sixth. That brought Patterson's season total to 17, tying him with Timothy Leary who set the record in 2012. Then on the first pitch of game two, Patterson went deep again, making himself the all-time single season home run leader.

Of Patterson's 18 home runs, 14 have been solo shots. He has led off an inning with a home run 12 times and nine of those times it has been in the Warriors' first at bat of the game. Patterson also has two grand slams this season.

The third baseman also set the record for total bases in a single season. He entered the day with 135 total bases, but with three home runs, one double and a single, he added another 15. His 150 total bases surpassed Simon Reid who recorded 142 in 2022.

With two games remaining in the 2024 season, Patterson also currently holds the single-season slugging percentage record. At .754, Patterson leads Leary by .036 percentage points.

The junior, who made just 14 starts for last year's World Series championship team, leads the Warriors this season in average (.377), OPS (1.176), runs (57), hits (75), doubles (19) and, remarkably for a lead-off man,  RBIs (52).

The two Warrior losses mean that Westmont will need help to earn a co-championship in the PacWest regular season. In order to do so, Westmont must sweep tomorrow's doubleheader with Concordia. Additionally, Biola (21-26-1, 11-8) must sweep #4 Point Loma Nazarene (35-8-1, 24-5-1) in La Mirada. Any other results will mean that Westmont finishes second in the PacWest standings.

With its two wins today, Concordia secured a spot in the PacWest Tournament that begins next week. Azusa Pacific and Hawai'i Pacific also notched tournament berths.

The Warriors and Golden Eagles will resume their four-game series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in Irvine in what will be Westmont's final games of the 2024 season.
