(IRVINE, Calif.) After a 3-1 start to PacWest play the Westmont Warriors have lost four in a row, which now includes a three-game losing streak in conference contests. A short-handed Westmont team (5-10, 3-4 PacWest) could not get things going in the first half against the Concordia Golden Eagles (9-6, 4-4), and a last-ditch effort in the second half fell short in an eventual 74-65 win for CUI.
Â
A Westmont team that averages over 70 points a game scored only 25 points in the first half on Saturday night, which sent the Warriors into the locker room trailing by 15 (40-25). Westmont once trailed by as many as 17, but the Warriors cut back into things a bit to make the second half more competitive. Westmont would eventually get within five with 12 minutes remaining, and keep things relatively close to that mark for several minutes.
Â
Later on, with seven minutes to play, a layup from
Adrian McIntyre saw Westmont get as close as they would when the club pulled within four at 59-54. Thirty seconds later, however, a shift in momentum took the wind out of the Warriors' sails.
Â
A Westmont player drove into traffic and wore a fair amount of contact in an attempt to convert a layup. However, the shot would not fall, and the Westmont player was not awarded the whistle. While Westmont's player was slow to get back up following the no-call, Concordia sped things up in the other direction. Moments before Westmont's fifth defender could re-enter the picture, a wide open Golden Eagle knocked down a backbreaking three-pointer, putting the home team up seven and sending a deflated Warriors team into a timeout.
Â
Following the three, Westmont would never again pull closer than five points in the eventual 74-65 loss. Individually, McIntyre was asked to play 40 minutes for the second time in three games as the senior led Westmont with 22 points.
De'Undrae Perteete added 12 of his own, while both
Aidan Mandel and
Remington Rofer each scored 11.
Â
While their most recent stretch has been unkind to the Warriors, Westmont can now look forward to the fact that beginning next Thursday night, their next six games will take place in The Murch. On January 16, a pivotal homestand begins when the Warriors host the Dominican Penguins at 7:30 p.m. Links to tickets and live coverage will be available on the Westmont Athletics website.
