By Ron Smith
January 9, 2025

(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Forward Jazmyn Shipp tallied a season-high 29 points in 26 minutes of play to help lead Westmont Women's Basketball (7-6) to an 83-59 non-conference win over Bethesda (0-19) on Thursday night. Shipp made 12 of 16 from the field and all five of her attempts from the free throw line. She just missed a double-double, pulling down nine rebounds, four from the offensive glass.

This is the second game of more than 20 points in Shipp's young career. Against Azusa Pacific in mid-December, the freshman tallied 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Mariah Brown went four-for-four from beyond the arc to post 12 points for the Warriors. Bailey Fong and Isabella Pearson knocked down three triples each on their way to 11 and nine points respectively.

Westmont struggled offensively in the first quarter and trailed at the end of the initial period by a score of 15-14. However, the Warriors turned things around in the second period, shooting 90.9% from the floor (10 of 11) including an impressive five for five from long range. Westmont tallied 25 points in the second quarter while holding Bethesda to 13, taking a 39-28 lead into the halftime locker room.

Westmont continued to build its lead in the third frame, outscoring Bethesda 27-12 to take a commanding 66-40 advantage into the final quarter before closing out the game with a 24-point margin of victory.

In addition to outshooting Bethesda, the Warriors edged out the Lion Angels 41-38 on the boards. Lisa Kiefer tallied eight rebounds while Sage Kramer collected seven.

The game marks the end of non-conference play for the Warriors. The remaining 14 games on the schedule will all be against conference opponents with Westmont seeking to earn a spot in the six-team PacWest Championship Tournament.

With a record of 3-3 in conference play, the Warriors would be the sixth seed in the tournament if the season were to end today. However, there are a lot more games to be played.

On Saturday, Westmont travels to Irvine to take on the Golden Eagles of Concordia (1-13, 0-7). Then, starting Thursday night, January 16, the Warriors will play six conference games in a row at home, beginning with the Penguins of Dominican.
