Westmont Battles, But Can't Fully Close Gaps in Three-Setter

(HONOLULU) Westmont Volleyball (7-12, 2-4 PacWest) dropped its first match of its Hawaii road trip on Thursday night, when the Chaminade Silverswords (12-11, 6-1) won it in three. After starting the season 7-5, and 2-0 in PacWest contests, the Warriors have now dropped seven in a row.

While the final line read 3-0, Westmont did not get rolled in a single set. Rather, it was the continuation of close-set losses that spelled doom for the Warriors. In the first set, Westmont trailed 19-14, then brought it back to 21-20 before losing 25-21. In set two, Westmont trailed 20-19, but couldn't quite draw even in a 25-23 loss.

In the third, Chaminade threw its best punch and left Westmont down for the count, with the Warriors trailing 12-5. The ever-resilient group, however, got off the mat with a 9-2 run, stunning the Silverswords at times in what ultimately led to Westmont taking the lead at 19-18. In fact, in a set they trailed by seven, Westmont came within a point of forcing a fourth set at 24-23.

From that point on, however, Westmont would surrender four of the set's final five points, which turned out to be the final points of the match in a 27-25 win for Chaminade to finish off the sweep.

Individually, Maddie Finnegan led the Warriors with 10 kills, while Audrey Hyde added eight and Nariah Prescott threw in seven. Lily Underwood and Sierra McClure each tallied 16 assists, while Rylee Elias recorded 16 digs.

Chaminade out-blocked Westmont 10-5 throughout the three sets, with the home team holding Westmont to a team-wide attack percentage of .121.

"Unfortunately, we just can't figure out how to get over the hump," said Westmont head coach Ruth McGolpin. "We had a good outing from Audrey and Nariah, statistically, and we had some nice blocks, too. Chaminade just out-blocked us on the night, and it was really what made a lot of the difference. Once again, there were red-zone mistakes on our end, but the team stayed together.

"As long as we can stay connected, I think that's the key. We love each other, they love each other, the coaches love them, and they love us. It's hard to lose, but we are still fighting and battling. We'll see if we can do some damage in Hilo on Saturday."

The Warriors will Island-hop to take on the Vulcans on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. HST, before flying home Sunday.
