(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Men's Soccer (5-8-2. 1-6-1) struggled in its game against Vanguard on Wednesday afternoon at Thorrington field, falling by a score of 6-1.
By the end of the ninth minute, the Warriors were down 2-0. By halftime, the Warriors were in a 4-0 hole. Four different Lions scored in the opening frame (Luke Parker, Robert Ronco, Adan Alvarado, Anthony Medina). Goals by Avarado and Medina came in the 30th and 31st minute of play.
"I can't be very positive about the performance," said Westmont's head coach
Morgan Cathey. "Today, we didn't apply ourselves as well as we needed to in order to give us an opportunity in the game - and that was right from the start of the game.
"We weren't committed enough in transition moments, especially on the defensive side - from every player. We gave the ball away very cheaply in areas of the field that allowed Vanguard to expose us in what they're very good at and that's transition moments."
In the 51st minute, a fifth different player scored for the Lions when Slater Hammer collected a deflection and scored from 17-yards out on the left side.
Westmont's only goal came in the 61st minute.
Leonel Olivo Ortiz sent a ball to the right flank along the ground. Then
Cash Anderholt one-touched a line-drive across the goal, finding
Weston Ash at the top of the six-yard box. Ash leapt and headed the ball inside the far post.
The final goal by the Lions was the second of the day by Medina, who intercepted a pass, dribbled forward and shot inside the right post from the top of the penalty arc.
"Huge credit to Vanguard and their program and how much they wanted to be successful today," said Cathey. "I think that our guys really struggled to defend individually and collectively all over the field - in the right ways and in the right moments. Against Vanguard, it needs to be better."
The Warriors return to Thorrington on Saturday to take on the Sea Lions of #14 Point Loma (10-3-1, 6-1 PacWest). Kick-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
