(CARSON, Calif.) Westmont Women's Basketball (3-2) traveled south on the day before Thanksgiving to take on the Toros of Dominguez Hills (0-4). Behind 28 points from
Jazmyn Shipp – the second highest scoring total of her career - Westmont outpaced Dominguez Hills 90-55. Shipp also pulled down six rebounds.
Shipp's performance was part of a team effort that saw contributions from all across the roster. The Warriors tallied 50 bench points, which is believed to be a team record.
"It was another great, balanced team effort," pointed out Westmont's head coach
Kirsten Moore. "Obviously, Jaz was a big part of that, but it was everybody contributing again. Without a doubt, one of our biggest strengths this year is going to be our depth and the fact that we are playing so much better together, making each other better ourselves out there. That was really evident tonight, again. Jaz got hot and we were able to find mismatches for her. Once she got hot, our team showed a lot of maturity because we were able to keep getting her the ball in different ways and different situations. We kept going to the well once she was hot and she kept delivering. It was a team effort to make that happen, which was really encouraging."
Bailey Fong added 11 points and four assists to the Warrior cause while
Noemie Bariteau and
Skyler Knight each added 10. Knight also tallied five rebounds and three steals.
Sage Kramer notched nine points and five boards while
Lisa Kiefer added eight points. Kiefer also snatched 11 rebounds and three steals.
Molly Garnand added six more points and grabbed seven boards.
Mariah Brown contributed another six point and seven assists.
Westmont's defense was stifling for three of the four quarters, giving up less than 10 points in each of the first, second and final frames. However, the third quarter proved to be an anomaly with the Toros outscoring the Warriors 30-19. Almost half (13) of Dominguez Hills third-quarter points came from the free throw line.
"We had a bit of a lull defensively in the third quarter," said Moore. "Other than that, we played great defense for three quarters of the game."
Fong set the Warriors off on the right foot, connecting on a triple in Westmont's first possession. That was followed by a jumper in the paint by Kiefer, spotting the Warriors to a 5-0 lead.
After a bucket by Jada Sanders of the Toros, Fong was fouled while shooting a three. Fong made the first two, then missed the second. However, Garnand chased down the rebound giving the Warriors an additional possession. Kramer took advantage of the second-chance opportunity and drained a 3-pointer to put Westmont on top 10-2.
After a Dominguez Hills free throw made it 10-3, Fong was sent to the charity stripe again, sinking both attempts. Another free throw by Kramer made the score 13-3.
The Toros scored twice, cutting the deficit to 13-7 before Kramer drove the lane and dished off to Knight in the left-hand corner. Knight drained her first of three from long-distance to make it a 16-7 game. Two more Warrior free throws by Brown turned it into an 18-7 Warrior advantage.
Westmont kept up the offensive pressure when Shipp hit a three from the top of the key before the Toros' Leilani Abraham connected on a jumper. The resulting 21-9 Warrior advantage proved to be the score at the end of the first quarter of play.
A mid-range jumper by Fong started the scoring in the new period, which was answered by Toro's Bryanne Lopez-Wood on a second-chance field goal.
With the score 23-11, Shipp battled on the boards and recorded an 'and-one' layup. Then, Shipp scored again when Fong passed her the ball under the basket. That gave the Warriors a 28-11 edge.
Shipp was fouled on the Warriors next possession, and made both free throws.
Noemie Bariteau made her debut in the scoring column on a Warrior layup that made it a 32-11 game. Shipp added two more on a layup after receiving a pass from
Navine Mallon. Then, Brown fed the ball to Shipp for another layup, making it 36-11.
A layup by the Toros' Zanna Hurst made the scoreboard read 36-13 before
Annie Gibbons was fouled and converted both free throws to extend the lead to 38-13. Kramer added a layup to give Westmont a 40-13 advantage.
The Toros' scored on a jumper in the paint by Luv'lee Sadler, then Anela Thomas scored on a layup, resulting in a 40-17 score. With the second-half clock running down, Fong drove the lane, then kicked out a pass to Bariteau who buried the triple to give Westmont a 43-17 score at the intermission.
Tiara Jones started the second-half scoring with a jumper under the basket that was answered by Garnand on the opposite end. Sadler then scored for the Toros, making the score 45-21.
Abraham then recorded a triple for the Toros, before Brown dished a ball to Kiefer who scored under the basket. A steal by Garnand led to another Brown-Kiefer connection on a layup, as Westmont went up 49-24.
Sadler made a couple of free throws before Jones did the same, reducing the deficit to 49-28. Sadler connected on a layup to continue the Toros resurgence before Thomas scored on another layup. That made the score 49-32.
Kramer put an end to the 6-0 streak by Dominguez Hills with a jumper in the paint. However, another Warrior foul sent Jones back to the free throw line where she sank two more. Jones was then fouled on a made jumper and converted the free throw, drawing Dominguez Hill within 14 (51-37).
After a layup from Shipp, Jones connected on a reverse layup. Then Shipp scored again, making it a 55-39 score. Abraham went back to the free throw line for two more complementary points before Kramer drained another three, making it a 58-41 game.
A layup by Lopez-Wood was followed by two free throws from Shipp after she was fouled on an offensive rebound. That made the score 60-32.
Jones went back to the free throw line on the Toros' next possession, making both. After the Warriors came up empty on the opposite end, Abraham converted two more free throws, making it 60-34. That was as close as the Toros would get.
With six seconds remaining in the period, Fong went coast-to-coast for a layup, making it a 62-47 score headed into the final frame.
After a scoreless minute and one-half to start the fourth quarter,
Skyler Knight converted a free throw to open the scoring in the final frame. Kiefer then made two free throws and Brown made another as the Warriors went up 66-47.
The first field goal of the quarter came three minutes in when Shipp connected on a layup to make the score 68-47. Abraham then hit two free throws, cutting into Westmont's 68-49 lead.
With six minutes remaining in regulation, Garnand fed the ball to Shipp in the paint, who scored on a layup. The two did the same on the Warriors' next possession and Westmont held a 72-49 lead. Then, Shipp kicked out a pass to Knight who scored from three-point range, advancing the Warrior lead to 75-49 with five minutes to go.
Shipp was then fouled and made both free throws before Camryn Washington scored on a jumper and was fouled. She converted the free throw, making it a 77-52 game.
Garnand scored on a put-back after an offensive rebound before Bariteau fed Knight who drained a triple. That put the Warriors up 82-52.
After a free throw by Brown, a fade away jumper from Jones made it an 83-54 game. Bariteau made two more free throws then followed that up with the final three of the game. That gave Westmont an 88-54 advantage. Brown then added two more free throws before a free throw by Thomas completed the scoring, resulting in a 90-55 win.
The Warriors have just one more non-conference game on their schedule – a road game at Cal State San Bernardino (2-2) on Saturday, November 29. The following Wednesday, December 3, Westmont begins PacWest play by traveling to Irvine to take on Concordia.
