(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Swim headed down the 101 Freeway on Saturday to participate in a double-dual meet at California Lutheran that also included Pomona-Pitzer. In double-dual meets, each team is scored against each of the other teams as though only those two teams were competing.

"We knew we didn't have the depth to keep up with Pomona-Pitzer, but that our dual against California Lutheran could be close," explained Westmont's head coach Jill Lin. "Ultimately, it came down to the last relay."

In the double-dual with the Regals of California Lutheran, Westmont claimed first, second and third in the 200 yard freestyle with Kate Spraul posting a time of 1:59.32, McKenzie Rion finishing in 2:01.59 and Katlyn McCurtain touching the wall in a time of 2:03.48.

Westmont finished first and second in the 100 yard breaststroke. Abby Rickard swam a time of 1:11.23 with Meliana Calica following at 1:13.25.

"Abby and Meliana have been so consistent this season and are definitely people I can count on in their events," noted Lin.

"Emma Bustamante won the 200 yard butterfly over CLU in a solid swim despite not feeling well," added Lin. Bustamante clocked a time of 2:18.18.

"Megan Traina had a great 200 yard backstroke in the first heat in which she only had one other person to race. She stayed strong the whole race and really focused on the details we've been working on in practice. It paid off with a second place finish." (2:15.06).

Westmont had another one-two-three finish in the 200 yard breaststroke, led by Madi Edwards (2:34.96), Calica (2:37.49) and Kelly Neill (2:40.19).

"Kimberly Greene had a great 500 yard freestyle coming off not training much," assessed Lin. "She came out with an intensity and determination that really showed in her results. Kimberly is a fierce racer and it's so fun to see her really go for it. She finished second and swam a season best of 5:16.53.

"The 200 yard individual medley was probably our best event with Madi Edwards (2:15.62) and Kate Spraul (2:18.59) going one-two over both Pomona-Pitzer and California Lutheran. It was fun to put Kate in an event she hardly trains for and see her swim so well. Madi had an incredible meet and I'm so proud of her grit and determination. She is so versatile and eager to improve. I'm excited to see her continue to progress."

In the final event – the 400 yard freestyle relay – California Lutheran's foursome beat out Willow Pezone, Daisy Marquardt, Spraul and Lauren Healy by 2.44 seconds to secure a 134-127 point team victory over the Warriors. Westmont's quartet finished the race in a time of 3:45.12.

"The team is tired (as expected) as we prepare to taper for La Verne Winter Invitational in two weeks," noted Lin. "This week, assistant coach Bailey Lemmon and I will be focusing on honing in on their race details and making sure we go into our mid-season meet with confidence and excitement. I'm excited to see what the team is going to do."
