Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Jazmyn Shipp tallied 23 points and 10 rebounds and Sage Kramer posted 20 points and pulled down eight boards as Westmont Women's Basketball (6-2, 2-0 PacWest) recorded an 87-57 win over the Oaks of Menlo (2-6, 0-3) on Saturday afternoon in Murchison Gymnasium.

For Shipp, it was her first double-double of the year and the third of her career. For Kramer, it was her third time this season to score 20 or more points in a game. Shipp and Kramer combined to go eight of 15 from beyond the arc.

"We knew coming in that we were going to see a lot of zone and we had shooters ready to take advantage," said Westmont's head coach Kirsten Moore. "I thought we did a good job of finding that early and throughout the game. There were a lot of contributions from everyone."

Also scoring in double figures were Mariah Brown and Bailey Fong, who each tallied 12 points. Fong made five of six attempts from the field including two of three from 3-point range.

"Mariah is doing such a good job leading us at the point with eight assists today," said Moore.

Defensively, the Warriors doubled the Oaks in rebounds (44-22) and held a 21-6 advantage on the offensive end. Lisa Kiefer, the current PacWest Defender of the Week, followed up an 18-point rebound performance on Wednesday at Concordia with 17 more today, including 12 from the offensive glass. Kiefer also scored six points while adding two blocks and three steals.

"Lisa continues to be so dominant on the defensive end and on the boards. As a shooter, when you have someone producing offensive rebounds like that, you forget you ever even missed because you get the ball back. It gives our shooters a ton of confidence. And it's not just Lisa, Jazmyn had five o-boards too. We are able to crash boards and create second chances – second, third, fourth… Today there was one possession where we were relentless on the offensive board."

That possession occurred midway through the fourth quarter when the Warriors were credited with six offensive rebounds (including three by Kiefer and two by Shipp) before Brown scored on a jumper to give Westmont its first 30-point lead (81-51).

The Warriors opened the game on fire from 3-point range, making six of nine long-distance buckets in the first quarter. Kramer and Fong each recorded two while Molly Garnand (seven points, three rebounds) and Skyler Knight (seven points) each added one. Kramer was already in double digits with 10 points by the end of the opening period in which Westmont finished with a 28-14 advantage.

Westmont's shooting cooled a bit in the second quarter, but their defense did not. The Warriors outscored Menlo 15-12, with Fong and Shipp accounting for six points apiece. As a result, Westmont took a 43-26 lead into the locker room.

Menlo put its foot to the metal in the third quarter, tallying 22 points – nine of which were the result of five Westmont turnovers. However, the Warriors outpaced the Oaks by one in the penultimate period (23-22) to enter the final frame with a 66-48 advantage.

The defense stiffened for the Warriors in the fourth quarter, allowing Menlo just nine points while the offense scored 21. Brown made four of eight from the field to tally eight points while Shipp collected six points.

For the game, Westmont shot 47.1% (33 of 70) including 40.6% (13 of 32) from 3-point range. They also went eight for nine from the charity stripe.

"We are obviously happy with where we are at," said Moore, "but we are focusing on trying to put four quarters together on the defensive end. We know we can continue to be better and sharper and continue to grow. I'm happy about our commitment to keep getting better."

Westmont will take a four-game winning streak into next Saturday's rivalry game with Biola (4-2, 2-0) at Murchison Gymnasium as part of a women's and men's doubleheader. The women will tip off at 5:30 p.m. with the men scheduled to start at 7:30.
