(CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif.) Westmont Men's and Women's Golf each earned a second place finish at the PCH Spring Invitational held at the Quail Lodge Golf Course on Monday and Tuesday. Both teams moved up in the standings on the second day.

The men's team finished eight strokes behind Simpson (Calif.) with a two-day team score of 605. The Warrior men outpaced Menlo and Hope International, who tied for third, by five strokes, and Jessup by 15 strokes.

The women's team improved by 26 strokes from day one to day two, coming within six strokes of catching Vanguard who won the tournament. Westmont surpassed Menlo on day two, finishing 10 strokes ahead of the hosts.

"After the first day, we found ourselves trailing Vanguard by 21 shots," reported Westmont's head coach Leo Maes about the women's team. "We recognized that making a comeback would be difficult; however, we firmly believed that by reflecting on our performance from day one, we could deliver a strong day two performance.

"We proved our resolve and shot +25 as a team, which was the low round for the tournament."

Sydnee Magpoc was Westmont's highest finisher, taking fifth with scores of 77 and 82.

"Three women recorded scores in the 70's in the second round," noted Maes. "Kyla Layman, Liz Oloteo and Hannah Camara."

Layman and Camara tied for sixth place. Layman had rounds of 85 and 76 while Camara posted scores of 86 and 75. Oloteo moved up six places to claim ninth by improving 12 strokes on day two (89, 77).

"I felt the energy was great," expressed Maes. "We understood that focusing on each moment throughout this tournament will benefit us in the future. Both Hannah and Liz demonstrated great resilience with their performance on the second day, and I couldn't be happier for them."

The men were in third place on day two but improved by nine strokes on the second day to move into second and tie for the lowest round of the tournament at 298.

Tyler Williams produced a consistent performance, posting two rounds of 74 to claim fourth place.

"Being at this tournament in the fall, I knew this course brought some comfort to our guys," explained Maes. "Specifically to Tyler Williams, who had another great showing."

Ryan Brady scored 75 in both rounds, finishing in ninth place. Brock Yurkovich had rounds of 77 and 75 to take 11th and Noah Lodewyk tied for 13th with rounds of 81 and 74.

"In the first round, Noah went birdie, birdie on the second and third holes," said Maes. "In the second round, Ryan Brady holed out for an eagle on hole 15 and Jack McGlasson birdied number two.

"The men competed well, I believe these were good reps heading into Corica. I was happy for Jack, this being his second collegiate tournament, that he was able to settle in and enjoy the moment."

The women will next be in action on March 17-18 when they travel to Ojai to participate in the TMU Spring Tournament at Soule Park.

The men will play a week earlier, March 10-11 at the Corica Park Golf Course in Hayward as part of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Tournament.
