Â
(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association have each released their postseason West Region awards and several Westmont ballplayers have been recognized.
Â
The NCBWA honorees are selected by committees made up of the organization's membership. The D2 CCA awards are nominated and voted upon by each school's athletic communications personnel (SIDs). The West Region includes the schools which play in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, The Great Northwest Athletic Conference and the Pacific West Conference.
Â
Westmont senior
Ryan Humphreys was named by both the NCBWA and the D2 CCA as the West Region Pitcher of the Year, and was named to the respective first teams of both organizations. Joining Humphreys on the first team of both groups was relief pitcher
Zach Yates.
Â
Bryce McFeely was selected for D2 CCA West Region First Team as a utility player (non-pitching). That designation requires a person to have played at least 25% of his games at two or more field positions. McFeely has played at both first base and in the outfield this year.
Â
Senior catcher
Shane Hofstadler was picked for D2 CCA West Region Second Team recognition.
Â
In addition to the player awards, Westmont's head coach
Paul Svagdis was named the NCBWA DII West Region Coach of the Year. Svagdis, in his first year with the Warriors, led the team to a record of 43-14, a PacWest Regular Season Championship, a PacWest Tournament Championship, and the program's first appearance in the NCAA West Regional.
Â
Hofstadler made his return to the Warriors after missing all of last season due to injury. The senior showed remarkable durability, playing in 47 games and making 41 starts. Hofstadler posted a .303 batting average. Of his 43 hits, more than half (23) were for extra bases (11 home runs, two triples, 10 doubles). Hofstadler led the team in slugging percentage (.634) and was second in OPS (1.021).
Â
Hofstadler's .625 career slugging percentage ranks third all time. His 22 home runs ranks eighth in the career record book.
Â
McFeely led the Warriors in batting average (.359), on base percentage (.464) and OPS (1.079). He tallied 13 home runs, nine doubles and a single to post a slugging percentage of .615. He also drove in a team-high 55 RBIs and stole 12 bases on 14 attempts.
Â
McFeely wrote his name in the Warriors' career records list finishing third in runs batted (152) and walks (103), fourth in home runs (30), fifth in runs scored (147) and total bases (308), and in the top-10 in on base percentage (.448) and games played (173).
Â
Yates rewrote the Warriors' single season save record with 13. In his 23 appearances, he produced a record of 4-1 and an ERA of 2.16 in 41 2/3 innings of work. Yates struck out 51 batters and walked just nine.
Â
The senior right-hander's name can also be found in the career record book, beginning at the head of the saves category with 25. He also ranks first in games finished (47), second in strikeouts per nine innings (10.32), fifth in total appearances (71), and sixth in ERA (2.38) and opponent batting average (.212).
Â
With a 12-1 record, Humphreys tied the record for most wins in a single season. In 88 innings, the lefty limited his opponents to a batting average of .186. He struck out 118 and walked just 29 on his way to a season ERA of 2.45. He averaged 12.07 strikeouts per nine innings of work.
Â
Humphreys' career 12.41 strikeouts per nine innings is the best in Westmont history. He ranks second in career strikeouts (308) and in opponent's batting average (.196), and sixth in wins (22). He and
Bryan Peck are two of three Warrior pitchers with more than 300 career strikeouts.
Â
Humphreys, Yates and McFeely are now under consideration for All-American honors.
