(HONOLULU)
Lisa Kiefer, who scored a career-high 15 points, was part of a trio of Warriors who scored in double figures that helped lead Westmont Women's Basketball (12-5, 8-3) to a 61-40 PacWest win over Hawai'i Pacific (5-12, 4-7). In the second of three games in Hawaii, Kiefer recorded her second double-double of the season by pulling down 11 rebounds.
Â
"Lisa has been playing so great and I'm super proud of her," expressed Westmont's head coach
Kirsten Moore. "She is so dominant on the boards, but this year she has been finishing well. She was seven for 12 tonight with some great finishes in transition. She deserves it with the work she has put in. Lisa did a great job on both ends of the floor.
Â
"It was a big game for us out here with Hawai'i Pacific coming off back-to-back wins. They had just beaten Menlo and Biola. We were ready for a dog fight out here."
Â
The Warriors jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the opening frame with senior
Sage Kramer scoring six points and collecting six rebounds. By game's end, Kramer notched her 12th career double-double, scoring 13 points and recording 10 boards.
Â
"Sage had a great attacking first half for us and in the first half she had five offensive rebounds," noted Moore. "She was flying in there and being relentless to find a way to get the ball to go in the basket."
Â
The second period saw Kiefer go three for three from the field and one of one from the free throw line to lead the Warriors with seven points. Kramer added another five.
Â
The Sharks pulled within four (17-13) with just under eight minutes remaining before intermission. However,
Molly Garnand collected an offensive rebound and scored on the second-chance bucket to spark a 19-7 Warrior run.
Molly Garnand finished the game with a team-high 12 rebounds and scored eight points.
Â
Bailey Fong continued the run with a triple, her second of four on the night. She made four of seven three-point attempts on her way to 14 points and a five-of-nine performance from the floor.
Â
After Kiefer added her seven points to the run, Kramer hit a trey and Garnand scored on a layup. Kramer then concluded the Warrior run with a layup, resulting in a 36-20 halftime score.
Â
Westmont extended its lead in the third quarter by outscoring the Hawai'i Pacific 16-10. Seven different Warriors scored in the penultimate period. Similar to the second frame, the Sharks cut into the Warrior advantage, reducing it to 12 points (40-28) with five and one-half minutes remaining before the final frame.
Â
Once again, Westmont responded, this time with a 12-2 run to finish out the third. Fong, Garnand and Kiefer provided back-to-back-to-back field goals. Kramer tacked on a free throw before Kiefer scored on a layup after a steal by
Noemie Bariteau. After a two-pointer by the Shark's Mya Hatchett,
Navine Mallon scored on a layup. Then, Bariteau added a free throw to make it a 52-30 game with 10 minutes remaining.
Â
That might have seemed like a comfortable lead for the Warriors. However, the team knew that two nights before, Hawai'i Pacific had overcome a 10-point deficit to Biola to claim a 58-53 win over the visiting Eagles.
Â
"Hawai'i Pacific outscored Biola 24-9 in the fourth quarter and they beat them," pointed out Moore. "They scramble and create chaos in the fourth quarter. We turned the ball over 11 times in the fourth quarter and gave up a few o-boards. It was not our finest quarter."
Â
It took the Sharks less than a minute and one-half to produce a 10-0 run, pulling within 12 points (52-40) of the Warriors. As it turned out, those were the last points the home team would score. Westmont kept Hawai'i Pacific scoreless for the final eight and one-half minutes.
Â
With 7:30 remaining, Fong knocked down a triple to put an end to the run. Then, with just over four minutes left on the clock, she did it again to make the score 58-40.
Â
"Bailey was so consistent in knocking down threes for us, including the one in the fourth quarter that was the momentum stopper," offered Moore. "It was great senior leadership by her."
Â
The final points of the game came with 22 seconds remaining when
Skyler Knight added a triple.
Â
"I am proud of our focus defensively for four quarters," said Moore. The Warriors allowed an average of just 10 points per quarter.
Â
With the win, the Warriors have an opportunity for a three-game Hawaiian sweep when they take on Chaminade (0-13, 0-9) on Saturday at two o'clock local time (four o'clock Pacific Standard Time).
Â
"The focus is to try and finish this strong now and give it our all before we come back to campus," explained Moore. "This will be our fifth game in 10 days – which is a lot on our bodies and a lot mentally, especially with the travel. Our ability to have mental and physical grit towards those things that we want is going to help us finish this trip strong."
