Westmont Swept at Hawaii Hilo to Conclude Island Swing

HILO, Hawaii — Concluding a demanding three-match swing through the islands, the Westmont women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to a hot-handed Hawaii Hilo squad on Monday evening, dropping a 3–0 decision (19–25, 18–25, 21–25) at Vulcan Gymnasium.

The Warriors (8-10, 5-5 PacWest) battled through a challenging, unpredictable environment but could not slow down an efficient offensive attack from the Vulcans (16-5, 8-2 PacWest), who hit .336 as a team across the three frames.

"It was a rough game and a very odd game—lots of challenges and craziness out there," said Westmont Head Coach Ruth McGolpin. "We were just a little bit out of sorts. We'd make a run of points, and then they'd make a bigger run of points to swing the momentum back."

Freshman middle hitter Jordan Weston continued her stellar stretch of play following her recognition as the PacWest Defender of the Week. Weston provided a major bright spot for Westmont in the front row, putting down seven kills on just 10 attacks with one error to post a match-high .600 hitting percentage while adding four block assists.

"Overall, I thought Jordan Weston had a really nice game," McGolpin praised. "She followed up her PacWest Defender of the Week award with another great performance, executing very well both in her hitting percentage and on the block."

Junior opposite hitter Audrey Hyde and senior outside hitter Valerie Coward paced the Warriors in total kills, sharing team-high honors with nine kills apiece. Hyde also anchored the defense with a double-double, adding 10 digs.

Sophomore setter Sierra McClure guided the attack with 24 assists and five digs, while freshman middle hitter Maxine Meder chipped in three kills on five attempts (.400) off the bench. Senior defensive specialist Malia de Jesus added five digs in the back row.

Despite taking brief leads in the second and third sets, Westmont was unable to sustain momentum against Hilo's relentless attack, as the Vulcans hit .500 in the second frame to pull away.

The Warriors complete their Hawaiian road swing with a 2–1 record after picking up consecutive victories over Chaminade and Hawaii Pacific.

"It was a long road trip, but we have the opportunity to play Hilo again in two weeks, and we're excited about that chance," McGolpin added. "We're looking forward to getting back home and having a homestand for pretty much the rest of October."

Westmont returns to California to resume PacWest action on Saturday, October 17, when they travel to face Biola.
