Santa Barbara, Calif. — Less than 24 hours after a grueling five-set victory, the Westmont women's volleyball team showed its grit on Wednesday night, shaking off a slow start to defeat Chaminade in four sets (20–25, 25–22, 25–22, 25–23) at Murchison Gymnasium.
The victory marks the Warriors' (10-11, 7-6 PacWest) second win over the Silverswords (11-11, 5-7 PacWest) this season, completing a regular-season sweep of Chaminade for the first time in program history.
"It wasn't the prettiest of matches, but it was good enough," said Westmont Head Coach Ruth McGolpin. "After a tough match like yesterday, we had just enough on our gas pedal to win that. I'm super proud of the girls and the way that they battled through everything, even if it wasn't the prettiest."
After dropping the opening set 25–20, Westmont responded by claiming three tight, competitive sets in a row to secure the match. Middle hitters Jordan Weston and Camila Cornejo-Farmer provided a steady presence at the net throughout the night. Weston put down nine kills while hitting .300, and Cornejo-Farmer added eight kills on a team-high .412 hitting percentage alongside three block assists.
Our two middles again were outstanding—Jordan and Cam created a nice offensive threat for us," McGolpin praised."And then down the stretch, we got better."
Outside hitter Valerie Coward paced the offense with a team-high 12 kills, making several clutch plays late in the fourth set to close out the victory.
"Val came through down the stretch," McGolpin noted. "She had two or three incredible tips over the block and then ripped one down the line."
Opposite hitter Audrey Hyde posted a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs, while adding two service aces. Sierra McClure directed the offense with 35 assists and 14 digs, while defensive specialist Alyson Wurster and Libero Rylee Elias added 10 digs each on defense.
"It feels good to beat Chaminade two times this season—it's never happened," McGolpin added. "We have practice tomorrow and then another tough match on Friday against HPU."
Westmont continues its homestand at Murchison Gymnasium on Friday, October 23, when they host Hawaii Pacific.
