(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Men's Soccer (7-7-5, 4-2-2 PacWest) missed a chance to clinch a berth in the PacWest Tournament on Wednesday when the Warriors fell to the Golden Eagles of Concordia (9-6-1, 5-2-1) by a score of 3-1.
Â
The Warriors scored first, taking a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute.
Kristian Johnson sent a ball over the top that a Golden Eagles defender chased down. However, when an attempt was made to pass the ball back to Concordia's goalkeeper, Leo Ripert,
Leonel Olivo Ortiz beat the keeper to the ball.
Â
Olivo Ortiz tapped the ball to the right as the keeper reached for it. Then, from five yards out on the right side, he slotted a shot along the ground into an empty net. The ball hit just inside the left-hand post for the goal.
Â
The Warrior advantage held until seconds before the first half ended. Joao Freitas served a ball from the right side of the field to the far post where Marcus Ozmai headed it in for the equalizer.
Â
An unfortunate event led to Concordia's second goal. A handball in the box was called on Westmont in the 62nd minute and a penalty shot was awarded to the Golden Eagles. Andrew Jun scored on the penalty kick, sending the ball along the ground inside the left-hand post.
Â
The final goal was scored in the 68th minute. Jun sent a left-footed corner kick from the left-hand side to the head of Jonathan Moreno. From 10 yards out, Moreno headed the cross into the right-hand crease.
Â
The Warriors' season now comes down to Saturday when Westmont hosts Point Loma (8-5-3, 5-3). Whichever team wins clinches a postseason berth in the PacWest Tournament. If the game ends in a tie, Point Loma clinches and Westmont's season comes to an end.
Â
Saturday's game, which follows the women's game, kicks off at 2:45 p.m. The women's game is scheduled to begin at noon.
