(HONOLULU) Westmont Baseball (14-5, 11-5 PacWest) finally played a game in Hawai'i after having its entire four-game series with Hawai'i Pacific postponed due to heavy rains in the 50th state. On Wednesday, the Warriors began a four-game series with the Silverswords of Chaminade (5-15, 7-19), recording a 15-6 victory over their host.
Â
The Warriors tallied six runs in the first inning, four in the second and three in the third to take control of the game early. In the top of the first, a lead-off walk by
Grant Yzermans was followed by a bunt single by
Rolen Reyes. That brought up
Jesse Di Maggio who singled up the middle, driving in Yzermans and advancing Reyes to second.
Â
Tanner Beltowski produced another RBI-single up the middle, plating Reyes. Then,
Noah Williams, playing in his first game as a Warriors, reached first on an error and advanced to second as Di Maggio scored and Beltowski took third.
Â
A ground out to short by
Griffin Brown drove in Beltowski and allowed Williams to reach third. Williams then scored the Warriors fifth run when
Isaac Veal singled up the middle. After Veal stole second,
Zach Mora reached on another error to make it a 6-0 game.
Â
After Chaminade scored a single run in the bottom of the first, Westmont sent nine men to the plate in the top of the second and added four more runs. With one away, Beltowski worked a full-count walk. Then with two away, the Warriors' second baseman took second and then third on consecutive wild pitches. After Brown earned another full-count walk, Veal singled through the left side to drive in Beltowski and advance Brown to season.
Â
That brought up
Jarrett Kozma who powered a three-run home run over the left field fence to give the Warriors a 10-1 lead. It was his second home run of the year.
Â
The Silverswords tallied three runs in the bottom of the second to make the score 10-4. The last of the three runs came on an unusual play. With the bases loaded and two away, Cade Fujii hit a sacrifice fly to center field driving in Alex Hamada from third with Chris Mata moving from second to third.
Â
After Veal threw the ball from center to Mora in the infield, the Warriors' shortstop held onto the ball for a few seconds before throwing to Beltowski at second base. When he did so, the umpire at second base called Mata out for leaving second before Veal had caught the fly ball in center. The unusual sacrifice fly and double play that ended the inning, also was a rare example of a batter being credited with an RBI despite technically hitting into a double play.
Â
In the top of third, Di Maggio led off with a single to right. Two outs later, Brown walked again, moving Di Maggio to second. Veal drove in both runners with a double to left center, making the score 12-4. Then Kozma singled to center field to plate Veal.
Â
Chaminade scored once in the bottom of the third and again in the bottom of the fourth to pull within seven runs (13-6), but the Silverswords would not score again.
Â
Westmont added two runs in the top of the ninth. Mora led off the inning and received an extra life when a pop foul was dropped by Chaminade's catcher. He took advantage of the opportunity with a single to right.
Orion Medeiros pinch hit for the Warriors and doubled down the left field line on a 1-0 pitch, giving Westmont runners at second and third. A two-RBI single to center by Reyes extended Westmont's advantage to 15-6, which proved to be the final score.
Â
Nick Romero improved his record to 2-1 by pitching four scoreless innings in relief. The freshman right-hander allowed four hits, struck out five and permitted just one walk.
Jaydon Geraci made his collegiate debut by pitching the ninth inning. After retiring the first batter (Mata) on a fly out to left, Geraci walked the second (Trysten Mooney). However, Geraci coaxed the third batter (Fujii) to ground into a six-four-three double play to end the inning, and the game.
Â
The Warriors and Silverswords are set to square off again on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. HST / 8:00 p.m. PDT, weather permitting.
