Warriors End Season Against Point Loma

(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Men's Tennis (10-10) concluded their season on Saturday at the Abbott Tennis Courts with a 6-1 defeat to Point Loma (7-10).

"It was a good fight," head coach Chris Elwood said. "Honestly, it really felt more like a 4-3 loss. We lost a superbreaker with Driss [Sedrati], and then Rafa [Matias] ended up losing a tiebreaker in one and 7-5 in the other."

The Warriors honored senior captain Diego De Cooman on the day. He and his brother, Antoine—who does not typically play doubles—paired up in number three doubles to celebrate their final day together as Westmont teammates.

"We had a great celebration after the match," Elwood said of the elder De Cooman. "We spent about an hour and a half together. It was great to have some time of community and honor Diego and what he's meant to this program."

As for pairing the De Cooman brothers together in doubles: "It was sentimental. I wanted to give them that gift of playing together in [Diego's] last college match. They've been practicing all this week together and doing really well. So, it was a special moment for them to play together."

Point Loma won the doubles point thanks to 6-2 and 6-3 wins on courts one and three, respectively. As a result, Driss Sedrati and Arjun Sivakumar had to leave their match on court two unfinished, down 5-4.

The visitors continued to show their prowess in singles, winning comfortably on courts two (6-2, 6-2), four (6-0, 6-3), and five (6-0, 1-1 by retirement).

Number three Rafael Matias was unlucky not to take at least one set. After being ahead in both sets, he dropped a tight-as-can-be first set 7-6 (7-5) and fell in a competitive 7-5 second set.

Sedrati, the Warriors' number one, lost a 7-5 first before winning a 6-3 second. The only match to go three sets, he was then defeated 10-4 in the superbreaker.

JD Drake, on court six, was the bright spot in terms of results on the day. The freshman who began the year recovering from injury ended it with a 6-3, 6-4 victory to win Westmont a point. He ends his first year on a five-match singles winning streak.

"I felt like the guys fought hard today against a pretty talented Point Loma team that's got some momentum right now," Elwood concluded. "The guys can take a lot from this match and learn from it, and we'll use it to rebuild our focus for next year.

"We're getting closer and closer—our scores with some of the top teams in the PacWest are 4-3, 5-2. It's a big step forward—we almost qualified for playoffs, we're one 4-3 match away from playing next week. I feel like the program is competitive and I'm really looking forward to taking another step forward next season."

The .500 record is a significant improvement for the Warriors, who last reached that mark in 2023. With seven underclassmen on this year's team, one can expect that the 2027 Warriors will continue their growth and compete at an even higher level.
