(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) For the first time this season, Westmont Baseball (21-9, 18-9 PacWest) suffered a doubleheader sweep. The Warriors lost 10-3 and 7-4 to the Golden Eagles of Concordia (22-18, 20-12) in Irvine.
Â
In the early game, Concordia jumped out to a lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run to right field by Wyatt Madison. The Warriors pulled within one in the top of the second when
Rolen Reyes laid down a squeeze bunt that brought in
Noah Williams from third. Williams had reached on a single to left center, stolen second and taken third on a wild pitch.
Â
In the bottom of the second, however, Concordia scored four more runs, three on a bases-loaded double to left center by Isaiah Walz. Then in the bottom of the third, the Golden Eagles added three more runs with Walz producing a two-RBI double.
Â
Isaac Veal hit a two-RBI home run in the top of the fourth, but that would be the end of Westmont's scoring in the first game.
Â
The second game saw the Warriors take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. With one away, Veal singled to left. Then
Aiden Voyles drove in Veal with a double to right center.
Â
In the bottom of the second, however, Concordia tallied four runs, taking a lead they would not forfeit. David Baruch singled to right field, driving in two runs. Then Ian Steward hit a two-run home run to left center. In the bottom of the third, Concordia took a 5-1 lead on an RBI-double down the right field line.
Â
In the top of the fourth, Westmont narrowed the margin to 5-2.
Joey Rico led off with a single to center field, then reached second when Veal grounded out to second. That brought up Voyles who produced his second RBI-double of the game.
Â
In the top of the fifth,
Grant Yzermans delivered a lead-off triple down the right field line, then scored when Williams grounded out to first. Then with two away,
Aaron Jacobsen doubled to left center. When Rico singled to center, Jacobson scored to make it a 5-4 game.
Â
However, the Golden Eagles responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth. Dylan Knowles scored on an RBI-single by Nolan Caira. Then Nicholas Erickson stole home, producing the final score.
Â
Westmont returns home to take on Jessup in a four-game series on Friday and Saturday, April 10 and 11. Doubleheaders begin at 11:00 a.m. on both days.
