(SANTA BARBARA, Calif.) Westmont Baseball (29-20) stumbled in the opening game of the PacWest Baseball Championship, falling to top-seeded Point Loma Nazarene (43-10) by a score of 9-2. As a result, Westmont will play on Thursday morning at nine in an elimination game against Concordia (29-24). The Golden Eagles were shutout by Fresno Pacific (33-24) by a score of 3-0.

The Sea Lions, who were designated the home team, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI-double by Owen May that drove in Hank Smith. Smith had led off the inning with a single up the middle. It would not be his last hit.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Smith homered to right. The grand slam put Point Loma on top 5-0.

In the top of the sixth,
Tanner Beltowski put the Warriors on the board, hitting the first pitch of the inning over the center field fence for a solo home run.

Then in the bottom of the seventh, Smith hit another home run, this time with men on first and third. That made the score 9-1.

Westmont added a run in the top of the ninth on an RBI-single by
Jesse Di Maggio that drove in
Aiden Voyles. Voyles had earlier reached courtesy of a walk, then took third when
Bobby Logue singled through the left side.

Caden Beloian took the loss for the Warriors, having given up eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in six innings of work. He struck out four and walked four.

On Thursday, three games are scheduled for Russ Carr Field. After the Concordia-Westmont match-up, Point Loma and Fresno Pacific will square off at 12:30 p.m. Then at 4:00 p.m., the winner between Concordia and Westmont will take on the loser of Point Loma and Fresno Pacific in the second elimination game of the day.

The winner between Point Loma and Fresno Pacific will advance to play on Friday in the first championship game against the winner of the four o'clock game on Thursday. Friday's action is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
