LOS ANGELES — The Westmont Warriors women's soccer team dropped a 2–0 road decision to Cal State LA on Saturday afternoon at University Stadium. The Golden Eagles struck once in each half to claim victory, leaving the Warriors looking to regroup as non-conference play continues.
Match Summary
Cal State LA established offensive pressure early, breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute when Analise Quintero finished off passes from Maitland Kohoutek and Luna Chavez to give the hosts a 1–0 lead. The Golden Eagles doubled their advantage in the 58th minute as Celine Gehrig capitalized on an assist from Itzel Carbajal.
Westmont struggled to generate opportunities in the attacking third against a physical Cal State LA defense, finishing with two shots on the afternoon. Goalkeeper Ellie Ludwig kept the Warriors within striking distance throughout the match, collecting seven saves under consistent pressure.
Head Coach Lauren Matthias' Post-Match Comments:
- On Goalkeeping & Defense: "Ellie Ludwig again had some big moments for us—the score was not a direct reflection of her performance in net. I thought we needed to be a bit sharper on clearing the dangerous second ball that LA is very good at creating chances from."
- On Physicality & Discipline: "The game got a little physical in some of those moments. They're a side known to battle, so some of that is us trying to match the physicality, but we did need to stay a bit more disciplined overall."
- On Squad Depth: "We are trying as a staff to continue to get different looks and see what the game is demanding of us. I thought Hannah Hayes provided some solid minutes, same with Madeline Steinbach."
- On Areas for Growth: "Cal State LA is a very tough road game and a high-quality opponent. The game is won and lost in both boxes, and we unfortunately needed a bit more quality there on both ends. We also need to continue to problem-solve and generate more in our SOG percentage and corner kicks. There's work to be done in developing and executing in the attacking third, and we look forward to a few days to make adjustments before getting out to Denver next week."
