Sean Coyne joins the coaching staff of his alma mater ahead of the 2021 season as Assistant Pitching Coach.
In his first season on the staff, Coyne helped guide the club through the COVID-19 pandemic. Miraculously, the club was able to play 52 games in 2021 without a single cancelation/postponement due to COVID protocols. The club went 30-22, hosted one of nine NAIA Opening Rounds, and won two games in the tournament before being eliminated by eventual World Series Champion Georgia Gwinnett.
Coyne, a 2015 graduate of Saint Augustine High School in San Diego, went on to pitch four years for the Warriors, compiling a 6-2 record in 96.2 innings of work. He recorded an ERA of 3.35, while limiting opponents to a .226 batting average. His 52 appearances are tied for the 26th most in program history, while his four saves tie him for 15th among Warriors all-time.
Sean graduated from Westmont in May 2019 with a B.S. in Kinesiology, to go along with a minor in Economics and Business.
After finishing up his undergraduate studies, Coyne spent four-and-a-half months as the Pitching Coach at Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego. He then worked as an Intern Throwing Trainer for Driveline from February - October 2020, before joining the Warrior coaching staff.
Coyne holds two Driveline Baseball certifications - Foundations of Pitching, and Basics of Pitch Design. Sean is also CPR certified.
"I am very excited to return back to campus as a part of this coaching staff," Coyne said. "Coach Ruiz, Cougoule, Ontiveros and Venzor made a profound impact on my life and ultimately they played a profound role to what led me in the pursuit of my coaching career. I hope to bring the knowledge that I have gained thus far in my career and also continue to build on that from other members of this coaching staff."
