Warriors Start Strong but Sunbirds Shine in the End

Westmont Baseball posted five runs in the first inning but stranded eleven men on the base pads in a 12-5 loss to Fresno Pacific (16-23, 11-16). Kiel Zielke (2-5) took the loss for the Warriors in a rare night game. He give up seven runs on five hits in one and two-thirds innings of work.

Freshman second baseman Nate Shaver led off the top of the first inning and reached first base when he was hit by a pitch. Senior right fielder Darren Fouret ran the count full before earning a walk that advanced Shaver to second base. Sophomore first baseman Eric Gaustad stepped to the plate and belted an RBI single on an 0-1 pitch. Fouret advanced to third, giving Warriors runners on the corners with no outs.

After a strike out by senior catcher Dominick Paluso, senior designated hitter Jordan Ballard connected for an RBI single to score Fouret and advance Gaustad to third base. With two men on base, sophomore Philip Valle crushed a 2-2 pitch, sending the ball over the fence for a three-run home run and a 5-0 lead.

After Sunbird starting pitcher Michael Mendrain hit sophomore third baseman Anthony Martinez with a pitch, Mendrain was replaced by Ryan Benson (3-1) who shut down the Warrior offense to pick up the win. Benson pitched six and two-thirds innings in relief giving up six hits without allowing a run. Brian Fast took over the mound duties for Fresno Pacific in the eighth and ninth inning, allowing one hit.

Warrior pitchers struggled to keep the Sunbirds in check. After Zielke left the game in the second inning, Kevin Fouret took to the hill for four and one-thirds innings of work in which he allowed two runs on seven hits. Jamie Barth entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning, striking out the first two batters he faced. But the next four Sunbird sluggers hit for the cycle and Barth departed the game having given up three runs on four hits. Kellen Skersies pitched the last one and one-third innings, retiring all four batters he faced, three on strikeouts.

Westmont (7-34, 3-24) will seek to even the series in another game with Fresno Pacific tonight, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
